Young Guns II (1990)

Posted in Westerns by - September 08, 2010

This week Lee and Dan saddle up and head off to the wild west on the trail of Billy the Kid!

Highlights:

  • It’s an all star affair with Aragorn, CSI guy and the dude from Star Trek: Generations
  • Dan identifies the order of Young Guns 1 and then Young Guns 2
  • Is this Emilio Estevez’s best role?
  • Young Guns II is reasonably accurate
  • Lee and Dan come to the podcast with no notes.
  • It’s lacking in robots from the future.
  • Lee compares Man from Snow River to Young Guns, Dan has no idea what Lee is going on with
  • Dan likes Christian Slater
  • Apparently Lou Diamond Phillips is very fragile.
  • At what point does riding out of town naked become awkward?
  • What are the responsibilities of the Lincoln County Sheriff?
  • Lee wants more awkwardness in Young Guns 2.
  • Dan talks demographics.
  • Charlie Sheen…
  • DON”T MISS DAN’S RENDITION OF BLAZE OF GLORY!!!
  • Lee likes the rating section… in kind of a creepy way.

  • Okay, we need a concert video of “Blaze of Glory” – that would go viral.

    • Lee

@Jeff, I have a general rule that I don’t share videos in which I’m doing anything that could redubbed, rehashed or re-anything into star wars kid territory.
I don’t know what Dan’s rule is on this but if he does I can’t wait to add an Alvin and the Chipmunks backing track :D

@Jeff, it is possible that this guy may even be a worse singer than me:

      • @Dan, ouch.

    Hi Guys,

I just finished listening and toally agree with your opinions on this one: A shallow western that’s a bit of fun, but not worth going out of your way to watch.

I’m more looking forward to next week’s review. I love watching Army of Darkness: the movice which gave young geeks around the world cool phrases to quote at each other.
Guess which one is my favourite?

    • Lee

@Ian, it’s funny that I didn’t really register this as a shallow western until talking about it. I mean it completely is but it did its job well enough that I didn’t really register it at the time.

  • See, if you were going to do a Western, I thought you might have opted for Silverado.

    • Lee

@MC, we had Unforgiven on the list at one stage but that felt a little too high brow for us ;)

  • SG-3

Confession time: I usually listen to podcasts at 140% speed, but after hearing Dan’s stellar performance I had to wind it back and re-listen at normal speed! Great work.

I saw Young Guns and Young Guns 2 pretty much as soon as they were available on VHS rental, but can sadly only remember the “Yoohoo. I’ll make you famous!”-and that was probably through watching the ad more than anything else.

Not being a western fan, I decided to get in the mood for this podcast by watching a Western last Sunday. Grabbing off the shelf some John Wayne that I only vaguely remember buying, I watched The Cowboys – which I’d never seen before. I was overwhelmed by how surprisingly good it was – I laughed, cried, got angry, and was in stunned awe as the film closed.

Well worth a look – and as a side note the movie had a John Williams soundtrack complete with Overture, an intermission complete with intermission and Entr’acte music, AND Exit music!

@SG-3, I have over the past 10 years become quite the Clint Eastwood fan including his westerns but I’m yet to explore the John Wayne westerns (I consider the two of them the titans of westerns). I saw quite a few as a kid but I think I was more interested in the concept of cowboys and indians rather than the actual stories or performances :)

    • @SG-3, I saw the magnificent 7 again recently and really enjoyed it.

  • I don’t think I know ányone who ever owned a LD player.
That wake-up e-mail is just gold. As for the Spanish guy (well he looks like he could be Spanish) playing..I clicked on Bon Jovi’s version véry fast.

It’s always very strange to see actors in older movies that you recognize from a movie/series where they became famous. The other way around is strange too, since it’s sometimes hard to shake off a role.
