Total Recall

Two weeks and two podcasts!

For some time now Lee and Dan have been promising to get their asses to Mars and talk about the Arnold Schwarzenegger scifi/action film Total Recall and now the wait is over

The boys discuss the non Total Recall things that they’ve been watching:

Dan has been reading stuff as well!  The book Redshirts which you can also read an expanded review over on Dan’s blog.

There’s a lot to talk about and we’ll warn you up front that this is another quite long podcast but it will have to tide you over for a couple of weeks anyway so pace yourself out!

Also the segment that you all love is back Dan once again goes through people’s Facebook profiles and mispronounces their last names in truly epic style!

So let us know what you think of this week’s podcast here in the comments or pop on over to the Facebook page and strike up a conversation.

I remember when this came out on VHS, there were 2 versions a PG one and an R rated one or the equivalent versions in the early 90s. Still listening to the podcast though.

    • http://quityourdayjob.com.au Lee

Mmmmm I wonder what the PG would have looked like, I don’t remember that at all.

I do remember the first time I heard of Total Recall was in Mad Magazine :)

      • Phil

actually it may have been more like M and R ratings. I do distinctly remember having 2 options at the video store and choosing the violentest version :) I never saw this at the movies only VHS. And the first time I saw it the whole “did it really happen thing” at the end didn’t even occur to me. It wasn’t until a few viewing later that it started to click.

    FINALLY!!!

See? That wasn’t so bad, was it? No, it wasn’t.

  • Jobless Jonathan

    Guys,

Another good episode! I would love to see you two on Amazing Race. I just can’t tell who’d be the man’s man and who’d be the whiny one. I’ll let you guys decide.

Please don’t watch Willow! It’s a horrible movie. Speaking of horrible, you guys are exactly right about Arnold. He’s suited for Terminator and Conan but all his other movies could have starred others. I think Michael Keaton would have been good in Kindergarten Cop.

The smooth sounds of Dan! I got a little weak in the knees when you did the voice, Dan. Wait, did I just type that out loud? #mancrush

Thanks for another great listen! Can’t wait for the next one.

Man JJ I was just about to suggest to Dan that I shall indeed crack and watch Willow but now you’ve got me reconsidering again.

      It doesn’t look good.

In all fairness to it and everyone’s affection for it I’ve no doubt that I will indeed watch it sometime soon, I can confirm however that it is not the next film.

      • Phil

I havent seen Willow since the early 90′s but remember quite liking that. Or maybe it was the video game I had the fond memories of.

It’s one of those movies from the 80s I always meant to revisit but never got around to.

        • Jobless Jonathan

          Phil,

There was a video game? What system? I don’t remember that.

I think I thought Willow was decent when I was a kid but it always felt like something was missing. Maybe like a ring, some hobbits, I don’t know.

          • Phil

            Hey Jonathon,

It was an arcade game by Capcom see the link.

            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmCbFZS3JVg

I think it was also released on the NES too but it was also on MAME last time I looked if you’re into that.

            • Jobless Jonathan

I never played that game! Wow. It does kinda look fun. I don’t know if it was my age or what but games seemed to be more fun back then.

My first game system was an NES, although my older brother had an Atari 2600. My video game evolution is as follows: Atari, NES, SNES, N64, Playstation, Playstation 2, then PS2 in closet for a few years till I had kids and we now have a Wii. I do play a friend’s Xbox 360 every once in awhile, though.

I thought it necessary to let ye know that I laughed so much at the concept of ye interviewing the planet’s downtrodden and afflicted only to ridicule and belittle them I almost hit a parked car on my bike.

    Carry on.

    • http://quityourdayjob.com.au Lee

Your story pleases me greatly, if enough road accidents occur we may just follow through on the kickstarter plan!

  • Kelly

It’s funny that you guys said it, because when you first brought up wether women find Arnie attractive, my first thought is that I always considered him asexual. I always liked his movies(granted I was like 8 when I saw most of them)but the idea of him being attractive grosses me out. :)

I do agree, Willow may be one of those that you had to see at the right time to absolutley adore. I freely admit to loving Ladyhawke and Legend too, and those are also pretty horrible movies….but I can never NOT watch them if they are on.

oh, and Dannnn…..you DID almost make me wet myself, but not in the way you were refering to, ha! Haven’t laughed that hard in a bit though.Thanks.

    Quite some stuff to comment
    - Turkey slap…we call it ‘swaffelen’ (have fun pronouncing that) and it’s been the word of the year a couple of years back. Some Dutch student even got fined for turkey-slapping the Taj Mahal. A fine example of Dutch decency.

    - Starship Troopers 4: I still can’t believe that Lee heard about it and still went through clicking play after the horrors of #2 en 3. It was a classic podcast though ;)

    - Paul Verhoeven : I’m going to record a proper pronounciation and will post it on your fb, your many many tries just make my ears bleed…

    - Total Recall:
Relating to the experience of getting hooked up into Recall…this is how they ran with it in the tv series Eureka:

I don’t know if anyone of you has seen Eureka’s last season? If not…this might be a bit of a SPOILER. SO SPOILER ALERT *warning lights whatever…
If you don’t care…or just want to know why I’m bringing up Eureka..
Because. A bunch of the scientists in Eureka are (without knowing it) hooked up onto a machine that creates a dreamworld where they are still inventing stuff, but much faster than in real life. As far as they know they just keep on living they’re life. But….and here’s where it gets interesting and to the point. *AND SPOILERISH*

Finally when they get out (the people in ‘real’ Eureka find out that the missing scientists didn’t die, but got hooked up onto the machine mentioned above), they come back into ‘normal’ Eureka and find out that the things they experienced and lived (incl. relationships etc) were way different than what happened in normal Eureka and vice versa. For instance in normal Eureka they thought the ‘hooked up’ scientists died with all the complications imaginable. But..as I said, to the point. The people that get out of the dream-Eureka are still ‘suffering’ from the Eureka they’ve been experiencing with the memories etc and have difficulty trying to cope with it. I know it’s a bit different from Recall since it works both ways, but still…

oh and wtf on Big Brother (I’m ashamed to say that it was a Dutch concept which made the guy responsible incredibly rich selling it across the globe)…they’ve completely milked the crap out of it overhere in any way imaginable, but I guess there’s always room for one more variation. I don’t think a ‘normal’ big brother will get any viewers overhere anymore though.

  • Skootur_78

Wow Lee, I had no idea you dressed up for your viewing of the latest Batman movie until i found this Pic of you in your Cosplay Batman gear!!

    (Sorry Lee, I had to…)

Any chance you guys are going to fulfill your promise of reviewing Bill and Teds Bogus Journey?

    • http://midmoclub.com Dan

The resemblance is uncanny. a little TOO uncanny.

  • http://fantasymoviepodcast.com Kasey

I really don’t get Lee’s severe reluctance to watch Willow. It’s not like its a movie everyone hates like Catwoman… It’s not exactly the best film ever made, or anything but I don’t quite understand the instinctual aversion Lee has.
