The one which Lee and Dan don’t watch a movie

What can you say?

When you get unpaid interns to do all the office admin work then you get exactly what you pay for.

Actually it’s just one of those weeks where Dan and I haven’t been able to line up our times and so we never actually got a chance to watch and talk about The Three Musketeers though rest assured next week we will be back swashbuckling our way through another podcast.

In the meantime why not wrap your ears around a super extended Week in Geek as Dan and I chat about everything wrong in comics and some other pop culture thingos:

Play

So next we’ll be back, leave us a comment in the comments below and shed your own light on the subject of The Avengers or defend Green Lantern!

PS I have no idea what Dan was doing with those songs ;)

That was a very well argued set of arguments, guys. What the hell’s with that? Where’s all the blood and gore? The screams? The completely irrational positions?

    So disappointing.

    That said… I agree.

Btw, did you see the new Green Lantern trailer? Very different in tone to the other trailers, and I think it’s much better for it.

    • http://allthatcomeswithit.com Dan

I am in too minds about the Green Lantern. Sometimes I think it looks ok, sometimes I think it looks awful. The film is going to be slightly hampered by the fact that I’m not all that keen on the caracter – both Hal Jordan and the Corpse in general.

      We’ll see, we’ll see.

    • Lee

I look forward to the Green Lantern in a way that I very rarely think about it so there’s no anticipation but when I am reminded I figure I’ll watch it and willing to be impressed but there is no expectation at all – doubt I’ll see it in the cinema and I won’t be surprised if it is a huge success or a massive flop.

      • http://www.caddicks.com/blog Jeff

That’s an impressive amount of apathy.

    Long list of thoughts today:

I have high hopes for The Avengers movie but I can see them only focusing on the main three: Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor. Everyone else will get a few minutes here and a few minutes there. The supporting cast will get much larger roles in the sequel.

Good Marvel films (keep in mind I have not seen Thor yet): Iron Man, Spider-Man Spider-Man 2, Blade, Blade 2, X2, The Incredible Hulk.

Bad Marvel films: Daredevil, X-Men, X-Men 3, Blade: Trinity, Fantastic Four, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Elektra, Punisher (both Lundgren and Jane versions), X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Hulk, Captain America (1990 version).

DC has had the better movie track record, though Marvel is slowly catching up.

Captain America (in the comics) was dead for two full years. While I am a big Captain America fan, I really liked that Steve Rogers was gone. It allowed for more interesting stories once Bucky Barnes became the new Cap. Same goes for when Dick Grayson became the new Batman and Damien became the new Robin (“Batman & Robin” is one of the few comics that I read religiously now). DC not only invigorated the franchise but they also created fantastic new villains (e.g. Pig, White Angel, etc.) in the process. Now that Steve Rogers and Bruce Wayne are back, both companies are beginning to stifle themselves again.

“Cat flushing the toilet” should be the closing song for every future episode…so random…yet so good.

I’m with you on the Avengers movie – I’m still optimistic about it. After all the Ultimates did a good job of having a large cast over a (relatively) short running time – and while that’s obvious comics not movies I think many of the storytelling principles are similar.

It’s going to have to be a reasonably long film though. But I think that it will be an event enough for people to tollerate that (like the LOTR films)

I quite liked both the punisher movies – but they were far from superhero movies I guess (you missed out Howard the Duck from your list)

DC do have a better history of films – but all their efforts seem so disjointed somehow. I was annoyed with myself that I didn’t mention their fantastic animated output though. Ultimately however I’ll never ever forgive them for throwing away Blue Beetle and Elongated Man. And Max Lord come to that. Justice League International were the hay-days of my comic consuming life. To be honest these days I just sample from classics pointed out to me by others rather than follow any ongoing books – so I’ll take your word on Captain America and Batman.

I love Cat flushing the toilet – and have an entire album of similar tunes I discovered. The only issue is copyright (we’ve been trying to avoid breaking it recently). But I’m tempted. Oh so tempted.

You’re right I did forget to include Howard the Duck. I must admit I was quite fond of that film when I was younger.

DC’s animated movies have, for the most part, been outstanding. I just watched All-Star Superman over the weekend. While not a great film, it was still far more interesting than the both animated Dr. Strange film and the animated Iron Man film combined.

Looking back at DC’s live action films it dawned on me that besides Green Lantern most of the DC films have either been Batman or Superman movies. They really have not branched out character wise.

Brilliant stuff guys, you should definitely do more of these!

I did notice though that the Ghost Rider movie get’s another beating :-( I’m not gonna fight it anymore: I admit that I defend it because it’s Ghost Rider, but even that’s getting hard after what marvel has done to the character lately :-(

I’ve been a comic geek for 18 years, but it’s only been in the Marvel Avergers and Marvel Knights universes (with a little Spider-Man here and there). If I were to explore other publishers (DC, Image, etc), are there any particular stories you’d recommend?

    • Lee

Just pin all your hopes and dreams on Ghost Rider 2 – in principle it sounds like they know what went wrong and are hoping to make a kick ass sequel that overshadows the first one.

I’m not holding my breath after watching Drive Angry – very similar themes except with Chargers instead of bikes.

      Other comics:

Walking Dead for a higher quality zombie series
      Hellboy and/or BPRD
      Powers
      Ronin
The New Frontier (for a golden age DC experience)
      All Star Batman and Robin
      Batman the Long Halloween

Those are just off the top of my head – I don’t think you can go wrong with them.

Testing the new facebook comment system – all hail the all present facebook!

Anyhow, I’d just like to add my vote for Batman the Long Halloween. I read it a couple of days ago and it’s great.

Looks like it generally works okay – it’s just an option for people

        • http://www.facebook.com/marshmi Ian Marshman

What a list! I’ll send it to Glen (my Comic Book guy, who looks nothing like the namesake from The Simpsons) and get going. I’ll start with Batman the Long Halloween first.

Thanks for the mention and the discussion of hovercraft right up there. I do feel though I have to clarify that I am a fan of the podcast and it is not just the hovercraft love that got me there! :P

I am yet to see Thor, it is still on my to do list, hopefully I can squeeze that in this weekend. I am a little apprehensive as I have not got the rampant hate for Iron Man 2, probably as I have yet to see Iron Man 1. I though have dodged a lot of media barrage so there is some hope I guess.

    • Lee

With no attachment to either the comic book character Iron Man or the first movie Iron Man 2 is probably better than a lot of the dross out there.

I’d be surprised if you hate Thor.

  • http://schwoit.com Dean

Yeah just got to work out how I can sneak out on my own to see it tomorrow.

  • http://soundtracksofwhatever.blogspot.com Arjan

I don’t read any comics but I liked the discussion tying in with the movies. I don’t know shit about the production companies but it was an interesting talk.

I liked Thor, had a good sunday night in the cinema. As for the Avengers, I don’t know the original story but I’ll probably go watch the movie to have an end to the story. But I think it wíll suffer greatly from too many characters. Probably ten times as bad as the other movies with too many villains. There’s barely enough time to introduce all the good guys, let alone the villain(s). Not sure if it can be done right.

As for man-flue, cut an onion in half and put it near your bed. Inhaling all night will help. Sure it smells in the morning but nothing a shower can’t help.

It was a good sweary episode btw :)

  • ESSGEETHREE

Thanks Arjan for the onion tip, and for helping me not feel so bad about my complete lack of knowledge of comic books!

I loved Asterix and Tintin and Lucky Luke (all from the library) as a kid, but only had the occasional Disney or random Phantom comic from Show bags – and my main memory of those are the ads for Sea Monkeys, sneeze powder and blood capsules! Man I wanted me some sea monkeys when I was young!

Yet another fun show- thanks guys!

I am doing a round up of podcast reviews and just want to say I really appreciate your show guys. Too bad the comments are closed so fast because I have listened in to bunch of episodes and thought I’d drop some lines.

    • Lee

Cheers for the feedback Joel, we’ve been closing the comments after 60 days because we’re getting a little smashed with spam of late and find that older posts tend to attract it more than newer ones.

Hopefully that won’t dissuade you from posting on the current ones!!

      Cheers again for dropping by!
