The Monster Squad (1987)

Posted in Comedy, Horror by - April 28, 2010

There is little secret to the reception that the Monster Squad are going to get in this week’s podcast as Dan and Lee have struggled through getting something recorded, in the end the podcast is about as professional as it always is…

  • Monster Squad business cards
  • Advice on taking very young children to monster’s homes
  • Lee only says the ‘F word’ three… maybe four times
  • Iron Man toy dildos
  • We refuse to refer to Arjan by his real name
  • How cool can someone actually be riding a bicycle in a black leather jacket?
  • How schools are teaching kids to make silver bullets in home economics now.

The Iron Man figurine dildo:

(listen to the podcast and all will be revealed)

This came with the Iron Man figurine!?

Just to illustrate it's intended purpose

Next week we are watching Highlander and it will be Lee’s very first time!!!

  • Please tell me the blue version still exists. I really want to hear that one. I mean, I REALLY want to hear that one.

    • Lee

@MC, I still have a copy of it. Maybe we’ll post it up with lots of warnings ;)

      • @Lee, does that mean I have to edit that too?

        • @Dan, as a former guest, I would take even the raw edit of the other one at a lower bitrate quality.

        • Ian

@Dan, Uncut please. I reckon that’d be even funnier.

        • Lee

@Dan, lol it would need to be polished around the edges but it might be a nice supplement – happy to edit it myself over the weekend actually – maybe as a replacement for next week since we won’t get the chance to talk Highlander straight away.

Doesn’t it suck when you re-watch something you LOVED as a child only to be bitterly disappointed? I was obsessed with the Lion Team Voltron when I was 8 – 11 years old, so much so I got (and still have) alsont all the toys that were available. Even the Castle of Lions for Goodness sake. About three years ago I borrowed some Voltron DVDs from a friend, watched the 1st 3 episodes and had to stop before my fond memories were ruined forever.

    Sweet Jebus they were bad.

So I’ve well and truly leaned my lesson.

@Ian, It was F-Troop and (blush) Mork and Mindy for me… fond memories turned to mush as an adult.

Catweazle was one I feared wouldn’t live up to the childhood memories, but it thankfully didn’t disappoint (for me).

DOH, Ian’s got me all nostalgic! Sorry… shutting up…

    • Lee

@Ian, Transformers is a bit like that. The series has a lot of low points but there’s enough nostalgia to get me through.

I imagine Voltron might not stand the test of time when I think about it. I also think that He-Man probably suffers as well.

I was recently watching Ulysses 31 and that actually is pretty good after all this time.

  • Well, I think you could get away with a clip show (the extra bits that got cut from other episodes that are funny).

    • Lee

@MC, we’ll probably save that for a rainy day but we do hang on to them all :)

  • The two movies I came closest to walking out of the theaters: Caddyshack 2 and Starship Troopers. Horrible films. The only benefit of Starship Troopers is the effects, which were nice.

So there you go. My abbreviated thoughts on Starship Troopers, as requested.

    • Lee

@Jeff, Caddyshack 2 – I barely remember it but am pretty sure that it’s below par… (thank you very much – tip your waiter)
