Oh, oh, I finally agree with Dan on something. I don’t like Inglorious Basterds either. It was way too self indulgent, the scenes ran for way too long losing any impact they had and too many sub plots and characters. Was quite a waste of potential.

    • http://allthatcomeswithit.com Dan

The first scene was great – and after that I just got bored. I was expecting something a little more action packed however so my expectations may have had something to do with it.

      • Phil

Yeah the opening scene is almost a shot for shot remake of the opening scene in The Good The Bad and The Ugly its its pretty good but it goes 5+ minutes longer then it should. I was hoping for more of a men on a mission movie which is what it was originally supposed to be that just focused on the Basterds which didnt help my enjoyment either.

        • http://allthatcomeswithit.com Dan

I just found out that I may have to watch the bloody thing again for a LAMBcast episode I agreed to do. I wouldn’t have agreed to it had I known the film.

          • Phil

Well I wouldn’t mind watching it one more time just to see if I like it better now that I know what I am getting myself in for

    • http://quityourdayjob.com.au Lee

I agreed with Dan on something once, it was okay, I got over it.

  • Phil

I actually agree with just about everything you guys said about Goonies. I mean I always enjoyed the film but dont put it on a pedestal like many do. I didnt like the troll character either.

I’m up for the Batman marathon, they had Batman Forever on tv last night and I had to turn it off after 20 mins the dialogue is so bad I looked forward to hearing being ripped on.

My boy is a huge Batman fan but we dont let him watch the movies but he saw the 60′s Batman a few times recently which he loves.

The winky face was having a go at Dan, I woudnt give Return of the King a 1 but I dont like it. Its sooo drawn out and the endless battle scenes get pretty boring quickly not to mention the 15 minute epilogue.

PS. Lee you MUST watch Stand By ME.

    • http://allthatcomeswithit.com Dan

But what if Lee doesn’t like stand by me? What will we all do then?

      • Phil

        Flame on!!!

    • http://quityourdayjob.com.au Lee

I saw the trailer for Stand by Me, I’m reasonably sure I get the gist of it.

Wesley Crusher, Young Indiana Jones, Quinn Mallory and Mouth miss their train and have to walk to where ever it is they are walking and at one point have to fight Jack Bauer…

Maybe I should watch it, it sounds pretty good.

  • Phil

PPS. Ally says thanks for the shout out :)

    • http://allthatcomeswithit.com Dan

No worries – it’s nice to have the brains of the outfit listen as well.

Great show as always listened to it as i baked bread and made brownies. Got a few points to raise.

    1) dont think ive ever got a shout out and a judgement on my facebook profile im hurt now :(

    2) I totally agree that the jim henson service is one of the most heartbreaking things ive ever seen even more than heres a spoiler Dumbledore dying.

    3) Total Film this month have done a look back at the goonies and you did it a lot better.

i think that is all so far time to go and check on the bread.

P.S cant wait to hear the comments about the rubber shark in batman next week

    • http://allthatcomeswithit.com Dan

      1) we shall give you a shout out (although it won’t be in next podcast as we’ve already recorded that one).

      2) Dumbledore dying never really bothered me – but then again I’m not a Harry Potter fan really.

      3) I haven’t read Total Film for years – I’m quite tempted to pick it up now.

First off, love the new opening!

Congrats on the new addition to the family Dan! Also, congrats on your 10 year marriage anniversary!

Being Elmo played at the Hot Docs festival up here last year, but I missed the screening as my son was born a few days earlier. Everyone I know who has seen the film really enjoyed it.

As for Goonies, I saw it as a kid and still love it to this day. Even though I have it on DVD, I find myself watching it whenever it is on television. I have not seen Monster Squad yet, but I know one local film blogger who constantly declares that Monster Squad is far better than Goonies.

Lastly, my wife and I just re-watched Batman & Robin on the weekend…you guys are in for some serious pain. I had forgotten just how bad that film is.

    • http://allthatcomeswithit.com Dan

Cheers man, I appreciate the congratulations. Although in both cases it’s pretty much been Kerry that’s endured most of the pain.

Monster Squad was very mean spirited in my view, and the humor and actors were not a shade on the Goonies.

I’m not looking forward to Batman and Robin. but I’m looking forward to Catwoman less…

  • Alan

If Lee doesn’t like Stand By Me you will have no choice but to ditch him and hire Will Weaton as your new co-host….he’s dead wood anyway

    • http://allthatcomeswithit.com Dan

I like the way you think Alan.

  • http://geeksofchrist.wordpress.com/ Mickey

I first saw Goonies in high school so I think some of its childlike charm was transparent to my older eyes. I never really dug it, which is kind of a shame. It’d be nice to be nostalgic about this one.

Now when I say high school, I don’t mean I was a teenager. I mean that I was in high school when I saw this. My teacher switched off the lights, turned the TV set on, cradled her coffee in the back of the room, and pressed play on a VHS copy of this movie.
And now I do right gud becuzz of my grat egge you cashon.

    • http://allthatcomeswithit.com Dan

During my nurse education we had a two week placement in a school (in order to give us experience of dealing with kids). One of the days the teacher put the original Clash of the Titans on in order to teach them about Greece.

Now that’s what I call good schoolin’

  • http://rantocracy.blogspot.com/ MC

No, you misunderstood me. The GoT miniseries had aired just before I started reading the first book. I hadn’t watched the miniseries, but because everyone else had, a lot of the events within the first novel’s narrative had gone memetic beforehand so the major plot points were wrecked for me beforehand.

    • http://allthatcomeswithit.com Dan

I haven’t read the books or seen the series, but i still know most of the plot. Such is the wonder of the internet.

      • http://rantocracy.blogspot.com/ MC

Because there was one particular fact that you know that was a huge plot twist that was massively spoiled by the people who watched the miniseries (it wasn’t the people who read the books that did that since as a whole they seemed to have kept their mouths shut so people could enjoy the surprise).

  • http://www.caddicks.com/blog Jeff

You asked who had watched Harry Potter without reading the books…. ME. And I was spoiled about Dumbledore, which was really freaking annoying.

I’m so into the ’60s Batman movie idea. Really looking forward to that. I wish we still had actual rental places around here so I could rent it and show it to my kids. I’m looking forward to the subsequent Batmans too, but only to listen to you guys rip ‘em up. I’m not sure I can stand watching them again.

Spielberg and bikes. I can’t believe I never caught how much of a thing that is with him. Totally true.

Jim Henson’s funeral – I barely remember the funeral itself. Not sure I saw the whole thing. I do vividly remember crying my eyes out every single time I watched the Muppet special where they said goodbye to him, and I was in college at the time. Reading the sympathy letters from kids. Damn… getting choked up just thinking about it. I’m with you, Dan. There’s never been another celebrity death that affected me like his.

Great podcast. I found it hard to concentrate on the work I was trying to do while listening.

  • http://heathcarney.com Heath

I agree with most of what you both said – love it, but the ending’s too sappy, Sloth’s unnecessary, etc.

A twitter friend of mine (@DangerAmy) lives in the area where The Goonies was filmed. When I tweeted that I was watching the movie the other day, she mentioned that they have a Goonies celebration in their town with location tours and other cool stuff. For the 25th anniversary, Chunk and one of the Fratellis made an appearance.

  • Kelly

My itunes has been attempting to download the podcast for three days now……and it keeps stopping. So perhaps I will get to listen to this thing by oh……next month.

    • http://allthatcomeswithit.com Dan

That’s annoying, I don’t know what’s going on there. It worked ok for me, but a couple of people have mentioned they have had trouble downloading the podcast recently.

You could always right click and download directly from the site here, but that’s not a long term solution I know.

  • Kelly

Well, at least the Midmo site got me through….itunes…..u suck. Still hasn’t downloaded there.

    Good podcast!

I don’t think you guys were harsh on the film at all, I pretty much agree with you on all points. I was worried a little bit, and I’m not even a huge fan. It is a movie that I will always leave on in the background if I am doing something. Umm…..No sequel please. I’d go in the middle with an 8.

On the spoilers topic, I also can’t stop myself from reading even if I am warned about spoilers. I’m too nosey. I DID just read some blatant spoilers on the Hunger Games facebook page….now you should no better than to even go there if you haven’t read the books, but it’s still annoying. third comment the dude gives you a summary of how the story ends. Nice.

Looking forward to the batman podcast…….I LOVED the 60′s tv series….watched the reruns when I was a kid, it’s still my favorite Batman series. I DID enjoy the Kilmer butt shot back in the day. :)
