The Golden Child

Posted in Adventure, Comedy, Podcast by - February 08, 2012

It’s a bit of a ramble this week as both Lee and Dan didn’t have their usual painfully researched and extensively comprehensive notes to work from.

Obviously the boy’s pure professionalism was enough to get them through, especially as they’ve long anticipated and planned for situations like this. You may have thought that the midmoclub’s previously shambolic nature was a result of Lee and Dan’s incompetence. But no! It was all an intricate plan to reduce your expectations to a point where you’ll basically accept any old claptrap.

And let’s face it – it’s worked.

Suckers.

Trailers discussed this week:

Lee and Dan should have also discussed the Brave trailer again as they told Kasey they would. However they forgot. Sorry Kasey.

The movie discussed this week was the 1986 Eddie Murphy action comedy – The Golden Child.

There’s no regular podcast next week, but you will be getting a sneak preview of some of the movies we’ll be watching over the next ten episodes – and also a few choice titbits from the midmoclub cutting room floor.

Glad you liked the Iron Sky trailer. Actually the film has been finished and it was shot here in Queensland, down the Gold Coast. Did you see the latest trailer when the director talks about the film making its debut in Berlin this year?

    • Lee

It has been a long time coming though, I remember this years ago. Kudos to them of course!

  • phil

I’ve always really loved this movie, although I always considered it to be a poor man’s Big Trouble in Little China.

I really miss this era Eddie Murphy, this and Beverly Hills Cops 1 & 2, Coming to America, 48 Hours are some of the great 80s action/comedy movies.

Oh and welcome to the exciting and thoroughly rewarding world of beards Lee.

    • Dan

You left out Dr Dolittle in your list of Murphy classics Phil

      • phil

Doctor Doolittle was the 90′s and I was talking about the 80′s otherwise I would of included the genius movie for sure…

        • Lee

I actually don’t hate Beverly Hills Cop 3 but I know a lot of people do seem to.

  • This is one of my 2 favourite movies of Eddie Murphy’s. I place it second only to “Coming to America”. Been a while since I have seen it and it one I need to pick up next time I am in the movie buying mood.

Since this podcast i’ve quite fancied watching golden child again, took a look thinking there should be a good boxset of eddie murphy films. funny you should say coming to america. i found one with both those movies and bloody norbit!! why norbit?? of all the films to have in a triple pack.

      • How else can they ship Norbit but to put it with two of Eddies gems?

        • Lee

Lot’s of Norbit drink coasters out there ;)

  • Tripitaka was played for a female actress Masako Natsume.

She died of Leukaemia, 11th September 1985, aged just 27.

    • Dan

      That’s very sad indeed.

      • Dean a.k.a. Dan's Mortal Enemy

Indeed it is sad. It does though explain Tripitakas complexion I think. Always looked very white when compared to the others.

  • Wow, that was an effort :-p

I haven’t seen this film in a long time, but it has a special place in my childhood. My favorite line from it is “You’re breaking my heart Ass-Wipe”, but it’s a little too racist to repeat now, even in jest.

Thanks for the mention but I was hoping for some more abuse. Last week’s spray (by Dan mostly) was pretty impressive ;-)

    • Dan

Not quite sure how that’s racist?

As for the abuse – it was Deans turn this week.

      • phil

        Everything is racist now….

        • yes, yes it is :-S

      • Good to hear you’re spreading the love Dan ;-)

      • Thanks for the insulting commentary Dan. I need more love in my life :-)

        • Bugger off Dean.

  • First off, belated congrats for hitting 100 episodes and a belated happy birthday to Dan!

I remember being very fond of The Golden Child when I was younger. Though I am curious to see it the film hold all these years later. There was a time, pre-The Klumps and Norbit, when Eddie Murphy could do no wrong in my eyes. I still like Murphy but I wish he would go back to more adult-centered films. Doing all these kids films of late has not helped his career at all.

What are your thoughts on the latest, and darker, The Amazing Spider-Man trailer? It is like they made the film for the moody emo crowd. Personally I miss the wise-cracking Spider-Man that is often shown in the comics.

    • Cheers man.

I’ve not actually seen the new trailer yet, I’m a bit out of the loop at the moment for some reason. We’ll cover it for the next regular podcast.

    • Lee

I think they’re going to run into trouble with the new Spider-man as they try to mix emo/darker with some of the one-liners of comic book Spider-man. I thought it didn’t quite fit during the car thief scene inside the car.

It’s a hard balance but I see no reason why Spider-man has to be this darker character now for film goers.

There’s also a little bit of Twilight being mixed in here as well.

      I don’t like that trend.

  • Lee after you get your horrific mouth surgery done you should tell your wife that the only thing that can soothe your misery is tiny little storm trooper men.

Also, color me shocked to hear your wife’s voice! Some part of me sort of felt she was mythical. Like how you know celebrities exist in theory, but its still weird to actually see them in the real life.

Dan, I don’t think your going to like Skyrim. lol You might have fun wandering around for a few hours looking at stuff. I’m pretty into it though. I’ve got the settings all modded so that it looks stunningly beautiful on my pc. Sometimes I like to climb to one of the tall in game mountains and just look at stuff. I guess I use it as a virtual hiking simulator or something. lol

I would talk about Golden Child but I’ve totally never seen it. lol

    • Think how I felt actually talking to her! I was convinced she was a figment of Lee’s imagination.

I don’t think I’m going to like Skyrim. But I’m not actually paying for it so i’ll mess about with it until I’m bored then send it back.

  • I have good memories of Golden Child. Good to know it’s not totally nostalgia. This was definitely during the good Eddie Murphy phase. The only one I can think of that I’ve enjoyed him in even semi-recently was Bowfinger.

You guys should get your wives to do a guest podcast together. They could do it pretending to be you.
