Great review, it even made me want to search for a copy to watch between parenting and house chors…..wait a minute….what was that jibe at Contact-wearers (may have been a previous review. I’m listening one-after-the-other to catch up)?

I also saw this in the theatre when I was younger. Totally blew my mind – it was that good. I remember when it came out on VHS later, I held a microphone from my cassette recorder up to the TV speaker. You know, (1) because I could, and (2) who didn’t want to listen to it in their bedroom at night?

I only hope I’m not quite as sad today as I was back then.

@Lee, you know I must admit I haven't heard the soundtrack to STIII in a long time, so I can't place it... but then that might say something about it right there. For my money, II and IV are the most memorable soundtracks.

@Jeff, I remember the first time I saw Wrath of Khan was at my Aunt’s house on a pirated VHS and had no real idea of what it was – I just remember the start on Ceti Alpha.

I actually prefer the Star Trek III soundtrack over this one, I think it’s more wondrous, but you are right this is possibly one of the best soundtracks of the series.

@Dan, you make an excellent point. This being the age of the internet, though, it's likely someone has done a mashup of Shatner "singing" mixed with the soundtrack. And if they haven't, someone should.

@Jeff, the frankinhooker thing should have probably been a out-take (there were a hell of a lot of outtakes, trust me - the raw material for this one was over two hours long and shockingly bad) However it tickled me that Lee and I were talking at complete cross purposes so I left it in. You say the movie has a good soundtrack - but I don't hear Shatner singing in it so how can it be good?

As someone who is old enough to have watched it in the theaters, I can tell you it was like a knife when Spock died. Of course I was also not old enough to understand just how definite it was that he would be back in the next film. But even if I had, it would have been an interminable time between films.

Where did that whole Frankenhooker in Idaho bit come from?

One thing you didn’t mention is that that I think this film has arguably the best Star Trek score – even that bit at the end of the podcast is a great example. Just makes me want to go out and get the soundtrack.
