Star Trek (2009)

Posted in Podcast, Science Fiction by - January 11, 2012

All good things must come to an end, even Star Trek movie marathons. We’ve laughed, Dan cried, Lee questioned if it was a good idea in the first place (he’s totally convinced it was) but in the end it has all built up to this last installment featuring the J.J. Abrams helmed Star Trek.

Fair warning this is a long podcast, possibly the longest that Dan’s bladder or Lee’s remarkably limited attention span has permitted. All we can suggest is that you skip out on work, hide out in your local school’s storage attic, pace out your sandwiches (you have a long way to go) and enjoy…

Play

In case you still need convincing Dan and Lee are also discussing Lego, Girl’s Lego, Bratz, Storm Troopers, the new Star Trek  casting, Lord of the Rings, Mexican eBay, wrestling masks and the following trailers:

Wow that’s a lot of podcast, almost too much gingerbread.

Join the boys as next week they watch Battle Beyond the Stars.

Ooh Battle Beyond the Stars next week sounds exciting I should try to watch that this weekend

    • Lee

I haven’t seen it for years, I’ve given Dan assurances which I don’t know if the film can fulfil. I mainly remember the space ship with the ummm

      • Phil

I have set my expectations to stun

  • YAY, you guys covered The Expendables 2!!!! :-D

I better listen to it now.

    • Lee

Admittedly we are slightly unkind to it

      • Phil

Speaking of The Expendables 2, I thought that Chuck Norris WoW ad was quite amusing

  • Phil

Zachary Quinto as Spock is one of the most genius casting I have ever seen

    • Lee

      Casting doesn’t get much better.

      • Kelly

It’s almost a little creepy seeing him and Nimoy standing together.

  • You’ve done your job Gentlemen: I want to watch this film again, very soon.

Also, I love the Hansel & Gretel analogy on The Expendables 2 trailer and I’m almost certain that Lee does not know John.

    • Lee

I’m reasonably sure I don’t either but sometimes you can never quite tell ;)

The extras on either the blu-ray and I assume the DVDs are quite worth the rewatch alone.

  • John

That has to be the best review of my profile I’ve had since “Better than a half-naked Ashton Kutcher”

    • I see another segment on the horizon (or maybe not).

    • Lee

Phew. Our online stalking has started becoming a problem :)

      • John

I dunno, random profile reviews could be an untapped podcast market. Though you’d probably need the friends-of-friends link to give a better view. At least, that’s why you could see so much of mine.

        • Lee

At least I’d know what our next 800 million episodes would be about ;)

  • I just started reading The Hungers Game series, not bad so far. Looking forward to seeing the film. What are your thoughts on the G.I.Joe 2 trailer?

Good job overall on tackling the entire Star Trek franchise. I re-watched a few of the films but could not bring myself to sit through the ones I hated (e.g. Nemesis, Generations, The Undiscovered Country) again.

    • Lee

Hey CS, I’m really considering reading them myself now so I shall check back in with you on whether or not they are worth it (or I’ll forget I said this and either read them or not and never check back in… right now I’m going to ask Twitter and Facebook).

We are looking at the GI Joe 2 trailer next week – it’s one of the ones I had up my sleeve for Dan to sit through :)

      • Phil

The ninjas running up the rock face at the end of the trailer made me smile

  • I don’t cry at the movies very often.

The farewells in Star Trek 6, Kirk’s eulogy for Spock in Star Trek 2, and Papa Kirk’s death in this movie hit me right in the tear ducts.

    • Dan

I cry all the bloody time in movies. One of the reasons I’ve stopped watching “kids in peril” films

      • Kelly

This why I will not see War Horse in the theater…..It looks as bad as Black Beauty, which I watched at home, and blubbered the whole entire time.

I also just finally saw How to Train Your Dragon, and that one had me weepy almost the whole way through too!

i don’t cry in front of peopleso I know which movies to stay way from. usually anything involving animals, lol. I can deal with people dying, I’m a weirdo.

Okay, off to actually listen to this podcast.

  • I got through the gingerbread then was interrupted by work. Promise to finish listening tomorrow.

  • SG-3

I want to hear more about the panel Dan’s on- his story got cut short!

    • Don’t have any more details than an invite to a potential panel as yet and fee tickets for the films during the weekend. the theme of the festival is “Heroes”, which sounds rather exciting.

The festival is being marketed by one of the Chris’ from Casta La Vista

I really enjoed the Karl Urban boner going on in the podcast. Also the one for Thor. Been a Urban groupie since LOTR(I mean come on, he IS playing a horse lord in that, how could I not?).

I just hope there is a lot more McCoy in the next film. Still my favorite character, no matter who is playing him. I’m starting to wonder where my fondness for Data ever came from, lol.

I NEVER made the connection between George Kirk and Thor.

    • Urban was bloody geat in RED too.

      • Kelly

I really enjoyed Red. Had no clue he was in that, but my bf caught it on HBO and told me I would like it. I mean how can you say no to Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman?

As soon as I saw the credits, I was like “Wait! Karl Urban is in this!? Sweet!” Chris just rolled his eyes, haha. I may have paid more attention to the plot if he HADN’T been in the movie though.

On the topic of books/movie trailers:
I also just found out that they already MADE a movie from the book Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, not sure if the trailer is out, about to go look for it.

I really want to see Pride and Prejudice and Zombies made into a movie too.

  • There is nothing on the tube tonight… you guys may have given me an idea for what to watch tonight. It’s either this or the Band of Brothers documentary. Tough call, though there is a surprising lack of transporters in most documentaries.
