Soundtrack Saturday: The Breakfast Club

Posted in Soundtrack Saturday by - January 29, 2011

I think if you are going to write about the soundtracks from the Midnight Movie Club era of films then you may as well start with the big ones first and frankly they don’t come much bigger than The Breakfast Club soundtrack.

Personally I think I’m probably a couple of years too young to really have a full appreciation of the soundtrack because it’s not one from my actual youth, The Breakfast Club was a film I discovered many years after its release through the wonder of heavily edited television.  I was shocked many years after seeing it on television today with all of the swearing back in.

So I’m going to admit it right now, the main song from the soundtrack “Don’t you (forget about me)” is the only song I have any real connection to.

Now this is a new thing for the Midnight Movie Club, we’re trying to add the soundtrack here through Grooveshark.  So Grooveshark is outside of our control and if the tracks ever get removed or the service changes then you need to cut us some slack :)

Here is the track listing in case it does disappear or not embed properly:

  1. “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” – Simple Minds
  2. “Waiting” – E.G. Daily
  3. “Fire in the Twilight” – Wang Chung
  4. “I’m the Dude” (instrumental) – Keith Forsey
  5. “Heart Too Hot to Hold” – Jesse Johnson, Stephanie Spruill
  6. “Dream Montage” (instrumental) – Keith Forsey
  7. “We Are Not Alone” – Karla DeVito
  8. “Reggae”(instrumental) – Keith Forsey
  9. “Didn’t I Tell You?” – Joyce Kennedy
  10. “Love Theme” (instrumental) – Keith Forsey

So did you grow up with The Breakfast Club soundtrack? Is it one of your favourites? Let us know in the comments!!

  • Cool new section, I have been listening to a lot of soundtracks lately. Just scored the Big Trouble in Little China OST which is fantastic in its cheesy 80s soundtrack kind of way. Also got on my iPod Dawn of the Dead, Suspiria, Dark Knight & Inception.

As for the Breakfast Club I was a teen when this film came out so I was a big fan of it. Don’t you forget about me is a classic and a favorite of mine on Sing Star. I cuoldnt really remember the rest of it until I listened to it on the player just now.

I’m doing the Big Trouble soundtrack next week actually!

I’ve got Dark Knight but I’ve yet to go ahead and buy Inception, I find the Nolan/Zimmer collaborations tend to sound similar when I don’t bother putting time into listening to them carefully. But I will get it eventually I’m sure.

I tried to sing Don’t You Forget on SingStar but realised very quickly that I don’t even have a vaguely working knowledge of the lines apart from the main chorus.

As for the other songs, I still don’t really know them ;)

Glad you like the new section, we’re keeping the marketing of them especially on the homepage low key but make sure you share em on Facebook and Twitter ;)

      • yeah the Dark Knight & Inception soundtracks sounds very similar indeed, I sometimes forget which one I am listening too. The Tron: Legacy OST is pretty good too although some off it tends to sound just like the aforementioned soundtracks in parts.

I have found most songs I do on Sing Star I only know the chorus with the notable exceptions of The Final Countdown and Ice Ice Baby :)

Look forward to your thoughts on the Big Trouble OST next week

This is one of those movies that I’m rather ashamed to say that I have never seen. But I’m very reluctant to do so now as I just know that, as a married 35 year old with two kids, it won’t have half the impact on me as it would have done if I’d seen it 17 years ago.

Have we talked about you not having seen this film?

Is this something I might have blocked from my memory!?

I’m starting to have vague recollections and… feeling… queasy… *thump*

Heh? What were we talking about?

Actually in seriousness I’m really curious to see if you would like this now that you’re separated from the target audience. In fact it could be The Sure Thing all over again but reversed!!

Mmmmmmm eyes off season three list

I’m pretty sure we have discussed it actually

I suppose I’d be up for it, but I’d much rather watch Some Kind of Wonderful. Now THAT’S a good John Hughes movie!

We’ve got Uncle Buck in a week or two which I consider one of the true champions. And of course you haven’t seen it either so that’s exciting.

  • Yeah, this one hit at the perfect age for me, but aside from the first track I don’t remember the other songs too well. It is an excellent movie, I think, even through adult eyes. Though it’s steeped in the 80′s there’s still something instructional to be gained about teens through it.

I just finished listening to the 10 songs in Grooveshark. Loved ‘em all!

  • Fun Fact: E.G. Daily is Elizabeth Daily, who was the high school dance singer in Better Off Dead and a well-known voice artist.

I remember her. Or rather I remember her skirt.

Or rather I remember her lack of skirt.
