Runaway

We’re back!!

It’s an all new season of the Midnight Movie Club and Lee and Dan are fresh off their break from the podcast and are ready to the films that keep you bleary eyed at work the next morning after staying up too late on a school night!

In fact they have purposely only been watching brand new films of the highest quality just to keep themselves fresh and ready to dive into the vault to dig up the sometimes less than fresh films of the past!

The first film on the agenda is the 1984 science fiction “thriller” Runaway.
It stars Tom Selleck, Tom Selleck’s moustache, Kirstie Alley and Gene Simmons… yes THAT Gene Simmons.

So you have Magnum PI, Saavik, the bass player from KISS and hat box sized homicidal robots plus it’s all directed and written by the dude who wrote Jurassic Park, how can this film be anything but awesome?!?!

Have a listen and see if it lives up to all of its promise:

A huge thank you to Kasey of The Fantasy Movie Podcast for almost being on Three of the Best and for providing the voice for our brand new intro!!!

Join Lee and Dan next week as they catch the bus and watch Speed!

Are you going to track this film down?  Have you already seen it?!?

Let us know what you thought in the comments!!

Haven’t heard the whole thing yet, but I gotta say this…. I miss the old music.

Nah, just kidding. I really like this new music. Very cool.

And that building trapping the guy… I’ve seen that movie. Can’t remember the title, and it didn’t have Selleck in it, but I’ve seen it. So… you’re only partly crazy.

I’ll be back after hearing the rest.

Best. Podcast. Ever. Honestly, I think I teared up a bit when I realized it would end.

(Damn, Lee, you’re right! It is easy!)

    • Lee

Everyone could take a lesson from you Jeff, you are the absolute cream of our listening audience…

      • http://allthatcomeswithit.com Dan

Wow Lee, that was a great response to Jeff. You really are great at interacting with the people who listen to our show. Your talents in diplomacy are second to none.

Great new intro guys thats awesome.

I like to think I have seen most movies that came out in the 80′s (best decade for movies ever!) but I cant recall anything about his movie. perhaps it was s bad my brain automatically erased it form my memory or it looked so bad I never wanted to watch it. Not sure I ever will though.

Oh and Dan Michael Criton also directed Westworld with Yul Brenner which is considered a fairly classic robot sci fi film. Also directed 5 other films I never really heard of too.

great new start to the season too.

    • Lee

I actually do rate this film as a midnight kind of movie – if it’s on late one night and there is plenty of grilled cheese sandwiches in the house then I highly recommend sitting through the film.

Of course if you are lactose intolerant maybe best to just watch the film :)

re Crichton – Westworld = an advanced theme park’s attractions go haywire and threaten the visitors… mmmm I wonder if that theme would come up again ;)

    • http://allthatcomeswithit.com Dan

      Don’t listen to Lee.

The only time this movie is worth watching is if you are moderately drunk and you have friends round who wish to rip the piss out of a crap film. Otherwise… no. Go for Westworld instead.

Thanks for the link up guys. :)

I’ve never seen this film, although I’m now pretty curious. My mother has always had the hots for Tom Selick, maybe I can find film and inflict it upon her. lol

    • Lee

If she digs Tom Selleck AND robots then this would be the perfect mother’s day present!!!

    • http://allthatcomeswithit.com Dan

Go for Quigley Down Under instead – far superior.

      • http://www.fantasymoviepodcast.com Kasey

When I was growing up, my father wouldn’t watch Quigly Down Under with my mom in the room because he thought she was making lovey dovey eyes at the tv the entire time. lol

PS. I went to Wikipedia and read the Runaways twist… :P

    • Lee

you should look up “sucks” on wikipedia :P

I have been slumming it with a less entertaining podcast during your break and can only say thank god you two are back on the job! Runaway sounds like its a so corny its mildly entertaining flick, and probably more entertaining than some of the garbage I have been watching of late (*mutters Battlefield Earth and Rumpelstiltskin*).

P.S.: Love the new jingles without the alleged robot woman, not that there was anything wrong with those!

    • http://schwoit.com Dean

Oh more hovercraft talk is needed, I hope the new book has a section on proper Star Fleet Hovercraft ettiquette. If not I am sure Lee can get creative :P

      • Lee

I think we need suggestions on films featuring hovercrafts!

        • http://schwoit.com Dean

How about “Moonraker” (1979), you haven’t done a Bond yet. Let’s face it you wouldn’t be stripping down a classic here.

For something newer but still >10 years old you can try “Shadow Warriors 2: Hunt For The Death Merchant” (1997). The latter stars Hulk Hogan and Carl Weathers so should be a winner!

          • http://allthatcomeswithit.com Dan

we’ve done moonraker back when we weren’t even a podcast:

            http://midmoclub.com/moonraker/

Of course it makes no sense at all because the formatting no longer works due to switching themes.

We should delete those posts really :)

        • Adam C

I know that at least one of the Andy Sidaris films has a hovercraft. Maybe Guns?

    • Lee

That’s why I encourage our listeners to visit other podcasts, I know you’ll be back ;)

Runaway is fun, I think we may have been a little harsh on it because I do think it falls into the so corny it’s good status.

“…and then the Englishman said, That’s not a robot sir, that’s my wife!!” bahahahahahaha

  • Adam C

Runaway works better when you realize the runaway robot section is basically Animal Control for machines. Most Animal Control is picking up stray dogs, getting creatures out of a house etc… But sometimes you have to wrestle an alligator out of somebody’s swimming pool.

The idea of the runaway section makes sense, if you postulate a world where this kind of tech is cheap and common.

Things like the drone bomb cars or acid squirters may be a normal means of terrorist attack (improvement on IEDs), so having equipment (armor and EMP pistol) and techniques (decoy car and target spotting) to combat those would make sense.

I’m not saying that the script isn’t crap and the actors aren’t phoning it in. Just that the world actually is fairly internal-logically consistent.

    • http://allthatcomeswithit.com Dan

I agree with you – and as I said on the podcast the robots are pretty realistic in my view – You’d not have a full sized man-droid when a box with wheels would do.

However I still say the helicopter was a bit extreem.

  • http://twitter.com/PhilKingham Phil K

So Lee, can we expect to see Yor: Hunter From the Future in season 4?
I think Dan really needs to see this.

    • Lee

I don’t know if Dan would appreciate it for all its glory. Having it seen it though so soon makes for a poorer podcast – keep this in mind when we look at Speed next week considering I watched it a couple of months ago.

  • Ian

Welcome back Guys, oh how I’ve missed you! (did that sound needy?)

Thank you for warding me off yet another lemon from the 80′s. I never know this movie existed but I’ll stay away now.

Dan, I’ve seen all the episodes of the Sarah Connor Chronicals and it’s sort of watchable, but don’t try to fit it in if you’re pressed for time.

Lee, I promise to give nothing but glowingly flattering feedback for the next week. Will that do?
