Hi guys,
It’s Lee here with a little bit of a departure from our regularly scheduled programming, if you’ve arrived on the home page looking for the latest podcast it’s the previous post.
Dan and I have been having a discussion regarding the level of swearing in the Midnight Movie Club and whilst Dan and I only do the podcast because it is neat to meet up online once a week and talk about a film that we’ve probably seen 100 times before we do care about what you the listeners think as well.
Now you may have read on Twitter that things did not go so well with The Monster Squad podcast. Mostly because the film serves as a reminder that we’re getting old and some films that we treasured as youth do not hold up particularly well and that’s disappointing and can top off an already less than remarkable week.
I only say this to put the podcast that you guys won’t get to hear until next week into context when I say that I use the F word a total of 47 times. Clearly this is too many times. I’m not effing Gordon Ramsey. But I was having a bad day and swearing enters my vocabulary when I’m ruffled.
So obviously as mentioned 47 times is going over the top but it did highlight for us a question we have and that is whether or not we should be a ‘clean’ podcast or not. Reality of the situation is that we both swear, but we are also able to conduct conversations in our day to day lives that don’t include swearing, so it’s more than possible.
My own opinion and I hope Dan will either add his to the end of this or in the comments is that one or two swear words are fine, it’s how I talk but it also means that you probably can’t listen to it around your kids. But with that said I’m also more than happy to be censored or bleeped out.
I guess what we’re looking for is a little feedback on the subject, so if you would be so kind please fill out the poll and maybe leave a comment around your own feelings on the subject – if you would like to drop us a private line that is fine too!

I keep thinking of the little anti-swear boxes attached to the walls all over the city in “Demolition Man”: ” *beep* John Spartan, you are fined the sum of one credit for using language that contravenes the obscenity act” or whatever they say. I think you should edit that sound effect in to the podcast.
As to the swearing, who gives a shit.
@JJ Daddy-O, LOL we discussed using Kirk’s “Khaaaan!” sound bite but I really like your idea and maybe Dan and I should watch Demolition Man soon to get that rolling

@MC, I think it’s been a long week and we’ve (meaning I) am just a little touchy about some online stuff.
As for the clips for Starship Troopers that’s awesome
Troopers may be delayed slightly as Arjan may or may not be having trouble with his computer.
@Lee, my pc is almost up and running again. Mcafee had an awesome update overhere that made pc’s crash nationwide. Which meant I formatted both drives..
So can someone give me a hint as to when I should have my clips in by?
@MC, Next Thursday. Maybe. We’re not exactly the most organized of people. Remember how long it took with the better off dead podcast.

this thursday I’m working a 9-6 (Berlin time). A one time exception to the normal 1-10. I’ll mail my schedule tonight..
I suspect that this swearing channels your feelings towards Monster Squad, and if that’s how you felt then keep it in.
And as for swearing in general, I say go for it.
(Out of curiosity, does your entire program get rated explicit on iTunes or are you allowed to rate each separate podcast?)
@Hannah, you can set it overall or individually I think we actually do both.
Ipersonally am happy with the swearing we do, but also am happy not to swear if it offends some people.
I also seem to have a slightly cruder sense of humour to yourself (the paralegal stuff). And that’s cool, and it’s good you can pull me up on it and say “edit that out you dickhead”
To put how I voted into perspective:
I was stunned and disappointed to discover that the two “bloody”‘s in my DVD copy of Muppet Treasure Island (including one from Billy Connelly, no less) had been re-dubbed with “bloomin’”!
To the other extreme, I was absolutely enthralled with the movie Moon, but my ears were bleeding by the end of it!
OK, so I grew up in a household where saying “Shut Up” and “Bum” was considered taboo! My own kids at least occasionally get away with “Bum”!
All that being said, I am a grown up, and it is my decision whether I listen or not. And I confess I’m still listening. My only suggestion would be to put an International Rating System Rating above the “Download the Podcast” on the actual midmoclub post. “Contains excessive use of the word “Bottom”"… or the like?
I say you fucking go for it.
