Nothing but a ramble

Posted in Midnight Movie Club by - August 25, 2010

Making your way in the world today takes everything you’ve got.

Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot.

Wouldn’t you like to get away?

Sometimes you want to go… and not watch Jaws this week.

That’s right Lee said he didn’t feel like watching Jaws and Dan folded like a cheap cards table and so they decided a ramble in the Bronx (do you see what I did there?)  was what was called for.  If you follow the Facebook page or on Twitter you probably saw the call out for questions already.  Well now behold the answers!!!

Listen as Lee and Dan talk:

  • buddy films
  • Hot Fuzz vs Shaun of the Dead
  • hovercrafts (really! there’s more!)
  • movies that they haven’t seen but are going to watch
  • film and dread
  • Schwarzenegger
  • 2001: A Space Odyssey
  • self fulfilling prophecies
  • films that scare them
Play

Next week the boys promise to watch the giant shark movie!!

    Bravo! That’s all I can say ;-)

    • Lee

      @Ian, cheers!

  • Holy cow, guys. This has to go down as my favorite MidMoClub-cast yet. You had me rolling during the hovercraft answer. I was worried about waking up my daughters with laughter.

And absolutely – Running Scared… beautiful film. One of my favorites.

Don’t be hating on LadyHawke! I actually bought that one.

Here’s a Schwarzenegger movie you could actually dread: Batman and Robin.

    Well done.

    • Ian

@Jeff, Testify! The only good thing I have ever been able to say about Batman and Robin is “I liked the costumes”.

      Sad. Very sad.

      • @Ian, Seriously? You liked the costumes?

        • Ian

@Jeff, Yes, I liked the costumes.

          • Dan

@Ian, Do you have some sort of nipple fetish?

            • Lee

@Dan, I pretty certain you have the nipple fetish if I remember our earlier podcasts…

              • Dan

@Lee, I forgot all about that little revelation :)

            • Ian

              @Dan, That’s my business, isn’t it? :-p

      • Lee

@Ian, I think the Mr Freeze costume is amazing, especially when you see the making of but I think the rest of the costumes were a bit pants.

Actually I think one of the sole redeeming scenes in the film is with Schwarzenegger as Freeze in the lock up when he makes the little statue of his wife on the clock.

    • Dan

@Jeff, This really surprised me as I thought it was one of our weaker ones. Perhaps I was just listening to my own output and not Lees :)

    • Lee

@Jeff, Wow that’s really interesting because Dan thought it was average, I knew it was a winner though ;)

I don’t really hate on Ladyhawke because it’s one of my wife’s films that she loves and we indeed own it too. Speaking of films that I own… I have a blu-ray copy of Batman and Robin…

      • @Lee, Yeah, you might own B&R, but you don’t actually watch it, do you? Be careful how you answer this as it goes to credibility.

        • Lee

@Jeff, the director’s commentary where he apologises for the film repeatedly isn’t too bad ;)

          • @Lee, ooo, well played. That almost makes me want to check it out.

  • Ian

Gee, thanks for the shout out(s) guys and thanks for answering my question.

I still can’t beleived your stances on Hudson Hawk. I mean, seriously?

And yes, I’ve ‘stalked’ you both on Miso as I don’t beleive in favouritism. I even befriened Dan on Facebook just to keep things fair.

Now, to sit here are wait for the next episode….

    • Dan

@Ian, To be fair one of the shout outs (the BMX bandit one) was aimed at a different Ian :)

Hudson Hawk is a classic. Don’t listen to the critics!

    • Lee

@Ian, it’s been a long time since I’ve watched Hudson Hawk so I think it might be time to revisit, perhaps we’re remembering wrong.
      But I don’t think so :P

  • GTPodcast

Wait, let me get this straight: you spent half a show discussing “buddy” movies, and the northern Englander Dan never once mentioned Sam Tyler and Gene Hunt? I mean, I know technically the question was about movies, but still – Sam and Gene are the best “buddy” couple in the history of male bonding.

    • Dan

@GTPodcast, I think Holmes and Watson would give Sam and Gene a run for their money.

    • Lee

@GTPodcast, I have no idea what you guys are talking about!!! Must be a British thing.

      • Ian

@Lee, I’m with Lee on this one.

      • Dan

@Lee, You’ve never heard of Holmes? Shelock Holmes?

        You ignorant swine.

        • Ian

@Dan, Oh, you mean the movie with Robert Downey Junior?

          :-p

      • GTPodcast

@Lee, If you have not yet seen Life On Mars – hands-down the best British TV series of the decade – you owe it to yourself to do so ASAP:

  • People thought it was crazy for Hot Fuzz over Shaun of the Dead preference. Glad I have some allies about this.

    • Ian

@MC, More than some allies. I saw Hot Fuzz first, which made me want to see SHaun of the Dead. Hot Fuzz all the way!

    • Dan

@MC, Oh yes, a much better film and far cleverer.

It’s a shape this Paul film is set in the US though, was nice to have some UK centric movies.

    • Lee

@MC, Shaun is kind of one joke whereas I find Hot Fuzz to have more to it

  • SG-3

Another top podcast… I quite like the odd ramble, and it was certainly that! I know you’ll hate me Dan, but I dare you to give 2010 a chance! It’s certainly not in my top 20 films, but I think it’s great, and way more accessible in a good way than 2001!

I love Ladyhawke, and I love the Ladyhawke soundtrack (I even bought it on vinyl with my own money!) but I don’t think the soundtrack works for the film. Go figure.

As for what film to watch on a hovercraft, surely you can’t go past this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vU3IqWRRguY ?

Thanks again for a great show (and for revealing my closely-guarded secret identity!) Cheers!

    • @SG-3, I’d forgotten all about that hovercraft scene!

We really should put together a list of Hovercraft in the movies.
