Movie Poster Monday: The Rocketeer

I can’t say that I cared all too much for the film The Rocketeer, it’s been a while but I think it failed to capture the adventure that it really should’ve.  That being said I absolutely love the character design which is showcased in John Mattos’ wonderful art deco style poster for the film.

It perfectly captures the era that this film was set in and in itself is an impressive work of art.  Interestingly the poster was pulled in the UK market in favour of the more tradition one that drew more attention to the cast which includes Timothy Dalton.  There was also concern with a couple of other sketches produced because they were worried that people would think of it as an animated feature.  I’d love to see some of those other sketches.

The problem with this poster is that it’s too good for the film, it promises way more fun than the film ultimately delivers which is a real shame because I want to see the film that’s in that poster!

So are there any Rocketeer fans out there who want to defend the film?  Any Art Deco fans who want to praise the poster?  Let us know in the comments!!

I definitely remember this poster – so I’m not sure if it was completely pulled in the UK. I could just have seen it later mind you.

I agree completely – an absolutely wonderful poster – and a piece of art worthy of hanging on the wall.

    That poster is truly breathtaking!

As for the film well its one of my fav films off all time. One of the best comic book hero films made. Failed to capture the adventure of the poster?? are you kidding? its one of the last films TO capture that style of charming adventure ala indy film. from the overall 30′s design of the film, the look of the hero,a reluctant hero who’s generally terrified in what he’s doing but does it anyway, the evil ott villian in a perfectly cast timothy dalton and the soundtrack especially the rocketeer theme is a gorgeous piece of music. Oh and jennifer connellys boob’s alone make this film worth watching!! I totally fell in love with her after watching this (and labyrinth of course).
They just dont make films like this anymore, imagine if they made this now the hero would be un- unlikable asshole with micheal bay blowing everything up around him..Im guessing marvel saw what joe johnston did in the direction of this film and hired him for captain america!!
Its just a shame they released this around the time of robin hood prince of thieves and city slickers which definatly had an effect on the box office of the film.as for me this could have made a really decent family franchise.

You should definately give this a re-watch maybe even for the midnight movie club.

Yup. I’ve never seen the movie actually. Perhaps we should add it to a list.
