Movie Poster Monday: Gremlins

Posted in Movie Poster Mondays by - January 24, 2011

I’ve always been really impressed with the way the artist John Alvin depicted Billy’s hands in this poster.  I know it’s a weird thing to pick up on but I think it’s probably the illustrator in me who appreciates it. The overall concept of the poster captures Gremlins and I wonder how much information he was given around what Gizmo would ultimately look like?

It’s also clever in that it features the creature in question without actually showing it thus leaving the surprise for those who had yet to see a trailer (remember this was 1984 and no internet spoiler images!). Of course if you stare long enough you start to wonder how Gizmo actually fits in that box!?

There was a rerelease or something, maybe the video release that featured this poster but had Spike as a Gremlin ripping through and scrawling We’re Back.

In case you missed it (and honestly how could you be so thoughtless!!!?) Dan and I did a Gremlins show a while back!

  • But it also notice how Gizmo’s hand is on Billy’s thumb… it indicates his gentle demeanor in the movie… that he is the good one because there is something very tender about that placement.

      That’s a very good observation.

  • Billy’s hands look tense though.
