Quigley Down Under

Grab your hat, your spurs and your modified Sharps rifle that can shoot a ridiculously long distance because the Midmoclub boys are headed down to Australia as this week they watch the 1990 film Quigley Down Under featuring Tom Selleck, Laura San Giacomo and Alan Rickman and directed by Simon Wincer.

An appropriate film to launch the start of the Midnight Movie Club second season as today is Australia Day in Australia and the podcast is properly debuting on the Australian based (but worldwide reaching) Lifestyle PodNetwork.  All the new jingles are in place and have been tested to highest levels of safety tolerances and the new segments are all running smoothly…

Well most of them.

Would you believe some of them?

Well anyway we can’t wait to hear what you think of the new sounding show so grab yourself some Vegemite, push the kangaroos aside, *insert your favorite Australian stereotype* and take a listen to the podcast:

So don’t leave it there!  Let us know what you thought in the comments.

We’d like to thank Rich Bassinder for being our first guest on the Three of the Best segment and if you’d also like to come on the show drop us a line.

Now you might have noticed that we haven’t included the trailer here and that’s because we’re now featuring them on the Midnight Movie Club Facebook page so you should also pop over there and be sure to like us and share us!

Join Lee and Dan next week as they watch the Michael Keaton auto industry film Gung Ho!

YAY, YOU’RE BACK! I missed you guys, Well, I missed Dan :-p

Great review of Quigley Down Under: so much so that I’m going to find a copy give it a burl. I’ve always been scpetical of american-produced films about Australia but this sounds like they’ve done a good job.

Now, on to the revamped show. The new segments are refreshing and the sound quality is much better. However, I’m not a fan of the new segment music, especially the synopsis (or whatever it’s called now). I really liked the old synopsis music.

    Thanks Guys.

    • Dan

      Cheers for the feedback man.

One of the main reasons we switched jingles is that I was becoming increasingly nervous about the copyright infringement we were doing with both the synopsis and the scores. Not that we’d probably ever get caught obviously, but it just felt dodgy. If for

Plus the guys at the lifestyle podnetwork (quite reasonably) ask that shows be concordant to copyright laws in order to join.

So I think the old synopsis music is gone, unfortunately. Personally I really like the new jingles – but appreciate the feedback and will have a think about them.

      • Ian

I can understand that and congrats on becoming part of the podnetwork. That’s gotta help increase the MidMoClub family.

Don’t worry too much about the new jingles, I listen for you two digging at each other and reviewing films, not the segway music.

Ian’s right that it’s not a big deal, but for what it’s worth the transitions sound … I don’t know… like corporate stock audio. I was kind of assuming they were given to you by the new network. If you do have a choice, there are some decent royalty-free score sites out there. Again, not a big deal, though.

I do like the new segments. You do a good interview, Dan.

        • Dan

The jingles were made by my (and my wife’s) own fair hands. The Lifestyle Podnetwork don’t make any demands at all on content (aside to ask for it to comply to copyright, but even then they say that its up to us if we break it but we’re the ones responsible)

It surprises me actually that they aren’t favorably looked on as I really like them. Maybe I’m too close to them.

I feel they lend a bit of cohesion to the podcast rather than just random backing tracks which were different in style. I have trawled through the various royalty free sites, but never came across anything that didn’t sound like it was made on a casio keyboard in someone’s bedroom.

I say give them a season to see if they grow on you. Because I can’t be arsed making any more right now :)

          • http://www.caddicks.com/blog Jeff

D’oh! Yep, them jingles are 5 star, dude. :) Don’t take me out of your will…

Seriously, it’s probable that they’ll grow on me. I didn’t like all the previous choices either at first, but ended up looking forward to them.

I agree with you about the cohesion, for what it’s worth. They definitely do add that.

I think what struck me the most was that they reminded me of segment breaks used in the Slice of Sci-fi podcast back when I listened to that, as the new commercials remind me of commercials there. Those similarities probably set me on the “corporate” track.

Why not add some Uke in there for character? :) That’s what I’d do. If I had a Uke. And knew how to play it. And a podcast. And an audience. Or friends. Hmmm… you’re doing pretty good without my feedback. Carry on.

            • Dan

You are still in my will. You’re just named as the guy to go to to settle all my debts :)

Yeah, the commercials give more of a corporate feel I guess. But the advantage of playing them is we’re then able to ask that people play ours :)

              • Lee

The fact I wear a tie during the recordings probably doesn’t help:

                • http://www.caddicks.com/blog Jeff

                  I knew you were a sell-out.

  • ESSGEETHREE

A big welcome back- I loved the show! I don’t know why, but I’d always assumed that Quigley was a comedy!

    • Lee

Same here! I thought it was a comedy and part of a series so I was thrown out completely when it was neither!

  • http://www.caddicks.com/blog Jeff

Good to hear that it really is as good as I remember (and maybe a tad better). Nice to have you two back as well. You’re actually the only podcast I listen to regularly. I was getting bored.

    • Lee

It’s a film that holds its own against the ravages of time because apart from some very minor components and of course the age of the actors I don’t think I could pick when it was made.

I’d watch this again in a couple of years if it shows up on the telly.
