Major League (1989)

By The Midnight Movie Crew, July 14, 2010 10:02 am

No trailer this week for the movie Major League as it was bloody hard to find a semi-watchable one and the only one that was actually found was one that paints Tom Berenger’s character as an evil stalker… ummm kind of like how Dan and Lee paint his character…

Highlights (?):

  • Lee’s opinion on how you are this week
  • 1989 in film
  • Dan didn’t recognise Rene Russo
  • Big baggy jumpers
  • Tracey (Lee’s better half) doesn’t like Charlie Sheen
  • Dan lies about the films he hasn’t seen
  • Lee gets on the edge of his seat in the Mighty Ducks films
  • Lee worries about them treating the game like a job
  • Dan likes wearing American sports clothes but not so much playing sport
  • This week it’s Dan who brings up the topic of balls
  • Dan sums up the rules of baseball as “you have to hit the ball and run around a diamond”
  • Lee praises Charlie Sheen behind Tracey’s back shhhhh
  • There are hair spoilers for Major League 2
  • Oh that’s racist
  • Dan likes the Dorn character…?
  • More mighty moustaches
  • Celebrity spotting… well the janitor from Scrubs anyway
  • In depth discussion regarding racism and voodoo
  • Lee proposes a gender census of the Midnight Movie Club massive
  • Frankenhooker
  • The podcast does lose the plot a little after the 38th minute
  • Captain Archer is a definitive role
  • Lee says “Faith of the Heart” a lot
  • Lee goes to Amazon
  • Dan questions the validity of listening to Lee wandering around online shops
  • Despite the general arse’n around during the final 15 mins you should stick around for the special ending of the podcast

Next week the boys are watching Rumble In The Bronx with Jackie Chan… well not with him… on their own…

I can’t beleive this episode didn’t have any comments yet. It does now so everyone can relax.

Was that last movie cut in Spanish?

    Lee Reply:

@Ian, Thank you Ian, you should rent yourself out to break the ice at parties.

I think it was in Spanish, I was looking for something to add to the end and I thought the Wild Thing sequence would be neat and then the only version I could find is in Spanish and then it made me giggle so I had to include it!!! I’ve always wanted to know what “strike this mother****er out” is in Spanish – it’ll be useful when I move to Spain… ummmmm damnit. Or “el damito”

    MC Reply:

@Lee, I thought it was Spanish to represent Berenger’s stint in Mexican baseball.

I agree with Lee, 8.5, and easy to watch again.

I love the team, against all odds scenarios, as I have been in a few scrapes with certain teams myself. Winning when no one expects you to do is a marvellous feeling.

Concur with Dan though, all the glory hunting fans (technically known as wankers) turning up at the end is annoying. And the bar they cut to with more and more people grows in annoyance.

    Lee Reply:

@Socrates, I’ll watch this again in the next six or so months I’m sure.

I love a good underdog film – though it may be interesting to watch a movie about a team that is awesome from start to finish… not so much drama I suppose.

@Lee, Another good underdog film is Cool Runnings. Is that gonna get a go on MidMoClub?

    Lee Reply:

@Ian, it’s on the magical list I believe – I think Dan might have popped it on there – I know there’s a lot of John Candy though I suspect we’ll probably watch Uncle Buck before Cool Runnings :)

    MC Reply:

    @Lee, as you should.

    Dan Reply:

@Lee, We are well overdue for a John Candy movie. I favor Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Haven’t seen that for years.

    Lee Reply:

@Dan, I watched that a week or so back actually so not as keen to watch it again so quickly. But Uncle Buck… ;)

    Dan Reply:

@Lee, I’m not convinced I’ve ever seen that all the way through, although I probably have.

Add it to the ever expanding list.

  3. Jeff says:

The most memorable line in that movie for me: “Hats for bats”

There’s so much good stuff in this film. It really is well written.

To the point of this being a ‘men’s film’… that’s true, but all that crotch grabbing and what have you is really particular to baseball. It’s a cliche that they’re playing up in the film – and it’s a cliche for a reason. It’s like all the firemen in Backdraft smoking.

    Lee Reply:

@Jeff, hats for bats is brilliant.

It’s surprisingly well put together for a comedy.

  4. MC says:

I am surprised neither of you talked about Bob Uecker.

And Lee, I am miffed at you, because you have forced me to agree with Dan. Bakula is Sam Beckett… it is as simple as that.

Let’s go over the facts. It was on first. On a major network. And he got hardware for being on the show.

“Scott Stewart Bakula (pronounced /ˈbækjʊlə/; born October 9, 1954) is an American actor, best known for his role as Sam Beckett in the television series Quantum Leap, for which he won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Drama in 1991 and was nominated for four Emmy Awards. He also had a prominent role as Captain Jonathan Archer in Star Trek: Enterprise.”

Even wikipedia agrees, and I don’t see any evidence that Dan was mucking around with the edits.

    Dan Reply:

@MC, Thank you. Although I am miffed about you being miffed at having to agree with me. I am always right, and the sooner everyone realizes this the better

And I didn’t edit this, Lee did – as evidenced by the fact that it hasn’t actually been edited at all, the lazy bastard.

Sorry didn’t watch this week’s movie, definitely for guys. Not even interested in viewing it. Maybe next week.

P.S. I would like to know if there are any other female listeners as well.

BTW, according to SamuraiFrog, the coach from this movie just died.

  7. Arjan says:

I’m not sure if it was this podcast (I’ve been listening to ML, Gremlins, Dragnet and Dan&Phil’s Hadrians interview in one go!…have to do something while at work) but I was satisfied that Lee was able to insult me even when I’m not joining the podcast haha.

The guy in ML is one creepy stalker btw, in current day movies he’d be the bad guy for sure.

I’m not sure if I’ve seen this movie, might have…

    [Reply]

    Lee Reply:

@Arjan, I don’t think people would accept his character doing what he does in this film today and that youtube video honestly didn’t have to try very hard to make him seem creepy :)
