Galaxy Quest

*tap tap* *tap tap* is this thing still on?…

Yes, it’s the triumphant return of the Midnight Movie Club! Well, sort of.

We’ve recorded another episode anyhow, and much fun we had doing it too.

So sit back and relax as you listen to us clear up such eternal questions such as:

- Does Frank Miller have a scraggly rat beard?
- What is Dan doing in his garden with old pallets?
- What did the boys think of The Avengers movie?
- Is Prometheus too scary for Dan?
- Who won that Amazon voucher contest?

And of course Lee and Dan also talk about the 1999 Sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest. Hurrah!

Play

We spoil you people, we really do.

No concrete plans as to when the next episode will be as yet, but watch out for announcements over on the Facebook page

Its good to hear your voices again guys, im going to make some lunch and sit down and listen to this.

    • http://quityourdayjob.com.au Lee

So what did you have for lunch?

Amazingly, I have to agree with Dan once again – some movies are better in the theater. Obviously, Lee, we’ve had this discussion on my blog already (well, that may not be obvious to anyone but you and me, to be fair).

Because I need the validation: Galaxy Quest was my idea.

The f-bomb: I actually think it plays funnier dubbed, because it’s sooo obvious what she’s actually saying, and the dubbing plays kind of like a meta-joke because it’s based on a TV show where they would have had to watch for that sort of thing, and doing that almost seems like they did that specifically so they could dub it over.

As I understand it, Sigourney Weaver begged to play that role. Not that she had to beg hard. I remember her saying something like that in the special features.

It was great having you back. You successfully wasted my morning, and I can’t ask for more than that.

    • http://quityourdayjob.com.au Lee

All this agreeing with Dan is leaving a sour taste…

I think no matter how she got on board Weaver was an inspired presence in the film.

We’ll see what we can do about coming back next month.

Other things that were removed or softened to get Galaxy Quest down from an R-rating:

Chen was supposed to be clearly a pothead (instead of ambiguously one).
There was a little more swearing.
And Gwen was supposed to have some alien sex too.

    • http://quityourdayjob.com.au Lee

I didn’t get the impression of pot head actually, I mean I see it now but I just assumed he was really chilled out.

Another great (and guffaw- inducing) show guys!

By the way, Prometheus was originally rated MA 15+ in Australia, however 20th Century Fox applied for an independent review, which resulted in the lesser M rating. http://www.classification.gov.au/Informationcentre/Mediareleases/Pages/2012—Media-Releases.aspx

( There is no legal restriction on who can see an M film. The content for M films is moderate and a mature perspective is required. M films are recommended for people aged 15 or older.

However, BY LAW a person needs to be 15 or older to see an MA 15+ film. The content is strong and unsuitable for people aged under 15. However people under 15 can see an MA 15+ film if accompanied by their parent or an adult guardian.)

As the child who had the seizure was 15, I guess all that is a moot point.

    • http://quityourdayjob.com.au Lee

I’m surprised the kid was 15, the scene in question is quite graphic and unpleasant but then in saying that I find most cinematic depictions of medical procedures fairly gross. It is a moot point since the rating wouldn’t have mattered then.

I like R rated films not because of the sex and violence but because bloody kids can’t come in to see them!! ;)

    Guys,

Great podcast! Glad to hear you again.

    Notes from a happy listener:

    - Lee, great question on what parents would take their kids to Prometheus! Idiots. I see it all the time here.

    - Hearing Dan berate Lee is refreshing. It’s so mean but it’s hilarious!

    - Avengers really was a great film! I knew you guys would like it. Downey Jr. stole the film, as he had fantastic lines and is clearly the best actor.

    - Dan, Cheers is good but Frasier is better. Not sure why I’m telling you that.

    - Dan, did you buy a Kindle or a Ken Doll? I’m having trouble with your accent. I find it believable that you would by either one.

    - Lee’s sentiments about the idiots in theaters are spot on. Here in the Austin/San Antonio, Texas area there is a theater franchise called Alamo Drafthouse. They actively look for talkers and cell phone users and kick them out of the theater! They actually have a youtube clip that plays a voicemail from an angry lady they kicked out. It’s beautiful.

    - Galaxy Quest was good, and I love Tim Allen. Always have since Home Improvement, one of my favorite, no, my favorite show from childhood. He was also good in Wild Hogs and the lesser known Joe Somebody.

    - PLEASE DON’T EVER DO A GHOSTBUSTERS EPISODE!

    - Looking forward to the next podcast! But no rush, you guys provide free entertainment which your listeners appreciate.

Hey JJ, how’s that job going??

      Now to address your points:

      - i’m horrified with what some parents will take children to.
      - It’s just mean.
      - RDJ easily stole the show, Hulk came very close though.
      - Frasier is indeed the better show.
      - Why would Dan by a Ken doll? He already has plenty. (boom tish)
      - I would visit the shit out of the Alamo Drafthouse, I’m very jealous of it’s existence being there and not here though we’d ruin it somehow
      - Tim Allen’s new show looks okay, at least from the ads, I can’t quite bring myself to watch it.
      - Yeah we’ll see.
      - Hopefully in the next month or so!

Great to hear the dynamic duo back on the air! My Wednesday mornings have not been the same since you guys took a hiatus.

    • http://quityourdayjob.com.au Lee

Cheers dude!! We really appreciate it.

  • http://geeksofchrist.wordpress.com/ Mickey

heh..I read the John Carter books because I didn’t get to see it in the theatre.

Actually, I read the first 4 or 5 books. Whichever are in the public domain. I don’t pay for books.

    • http://quityourdayjob.com.au Lee

I’m loving Princess of Mars right now (and I loved the film anyway).

I’m cool with paying $2 for five books ;)

  • Kelly

Glad to hear you guys still picking on each other. :)

Galaxy Quest is pretty much on the top of my wanna-see-it movie list…….one of these days.

I am interested in Prometheus…..I’ve never seen any of the Alien movies though. Okay, I’m not gonna lie, I’m on board with Lee’s wife……I just like Mr. Fassbender. They’ve been playing X-Men First Class and Jane Eyre non stop on HBO lately……I’ve become a fan. :P

I STILL HAVE NOT SEEN THE AVENGERS!!!! it’ bugging me…I may just go by myself after work one day….but the bf was the one that kept saying he wanted to see it the week it came out, but we were busy……and now the weather is nice, soooo i”m still waiting to go see it. Bah.

I too hope to never see a Ghostbusters podcast………though I actually haven’t seen the movie….I VERY vaguely remember bits from my childhood, I’m sure I was under 5 when/if I saw it….I DID watch the cartoon.

    This made working bearable :)

    But …wow…spending 50+€ on a cinema ticket….
I suppose it’s just the price that sorts the public (a bit), because I pay normal rates for midnight showings. As for the crowds, I haven’t had any really bad experiences in the cinema overhere (speaking at least for the past year).

As for Galaxy quest, it’s just another movie I can’t recall if I’ve seen it or not. So…I’ll get it from Larry.

Take your time for the podcasting, I always found it truly incredible how you managed to make time for an hour long podcast each week next to trying to have a life, building sheds, making babies and reading comics on the commute to work (not all of the aforementioned on the commute…).
I’d be happy if you’d make the older podcasts available for download though, keeps me podcast-provided for the coming months :D
