No Dan this week and also no embedded trailer because for some reason a certain film studio doesn’t allow embedding of a 20 year old film trailer because it might encourage someone to seek out the film…
- Matt from Culture Kills drops off a couple of things to say
- Lee’s first time watching the film (huge and massive thanks to SG3)
- It was really hard to classify – science fiction??
- It’s a lot shorter this week as well which is always a bonus
Next week’s move is a mystery… maybe Lee’s open to suggestion…

I’ve never seen this film and, alas, I’m still not moved to see it. Don’t get me wrong Lee, you gave it a great review that I enjoyed listening to. However, it stars Kevin Costner which is an instant turnoff for me.
My first exposure to the ‘If you build it’ saying was from Wayne’s World 2, when Jim Morrison says to Wayne ‘If you book them, they will come’. I knew it was a ripoff, but I just didn’t know where from. Thanks for filling another gap in my knowledge.
Oh and thanks for thinking of me and my iTunes downloading wowes last week. This espisode came down issue-free
@Ian, I think if it’s on television one day and you’ve got an hour and a half it would be a pleasant enough diversion even if you don’t really dig baseball or Costner for that matter.
@Lee, which describes me.
@Lee, Oh, I dig baseball films. Major League was awesome!
@Ian, I have to admit that this is the only film starring Kevin Costner that I’ve watched where I haven’t felt “Keven Costner’s role could so easily have been played by someone else – and probably better!” I’m not a big Costner fan but I love this film, and he works well in it. I think the strong supporting cast helps!
@SG-3, OK then, maybe I’ll watch it if it happens to be on TV when I have nothing elso to do. Maybe.
I am imagining how short it would have been without me. Hehehehe.
@MC, it’s one of those films that is hard to define and pleasant enough that it is near impossible to really on about in any great length.
@MC, I’m suprised you haven’t been included in a ‘live’ recording yet. Doesn’t your timezone align well with Lee and Dan’s?
@Ian, Matt doesn’t have Skype otherwise he’d be on every second week **looking at Matt to upgrade already and get himself some Skype**
@Lee, I am SO much better on Memorex.
Thanks for the great review Lee! As for trying to classify it genre-wise… according to the excellent making-of feature on the DVD, the distributors had the same problem! For all its baseball, it’s not really a baseball film, and for all its ghosts, it’s not a ghost movie. It reminds me of the scene in “Stand By Me” when the boys are debating “What is Goofy?”!
@SG-3, that’s alright it was weird doing another podcast without my partner in crime – going to be super weird when he’s on the charity walk!
I didn’t realise how hard to classify the movie was until picking the category for it here on the blog.
Thanks again for the copy!!!
As far as “sweetness” in films nowadays, it seems to be relegated to Pixar and pretenders to their throne. But then those are skewed towards kids (but adult friendly), where this is aimed more at adults (but kid friendly, if I remember correctly). You’re right, though, that movies with this much heart and quality are rare. I do think that a good one would break through the pervading cynical atmosphere though.
Now, mind you I am a rabid baseball fan and from Boston but this film holds a very special place in my heart.
To me the ultimate moment in the film is Terrance Man showing up in the headlights of the VW camper. It’s just such a powerful moment of validation and un-aloneness. Yes, I just made up un-alonesss.
And Terrance Man’s speech at the end is a close second.
The Voice’s quotes through out the movie are fine for moving the plot along but I don’t see them as memorable.
Hey…Dad…. You wanna have a catch?
I’d like that.
Oh, man that gets me!
