And if one day my girls see this film and enjoy it, and want to watch it over and over again, I will let them. But I’ll have to move out of the house, because all I remember from my last viewing of it (which was some time in the last decade) is the pain I felt. Superman III hurt, but this hurt more. Superman IV however, keeps Supergirl from being the bottom of the pile.

I do have to say, Lee, that I disagree with your assertion about Superman Returns. I still enjoy that one quite a bit (despite its problems).

Fables, and its success, is what I credit for the recent crazy uptick in fairy tale stories… though I am at a bit of a loss as to why it seems to center almost exclusively on Snow White (with the exception of “Grimm” on TV).

It boggles my mind that that hasn’t become a meme yet.

I think of it now and then whilst all these related shows and movies come out and wonder if it weren’t before its time

I’ve never seen Supergirl, but it sounds horrific. I’m morbidly curious about it now. I’ve never been a big fan of supergirl. They can never figure out what her personality is supposed to be in the comics. The only supergirl I ever liked was a Supergirl archive I came across at the library before. And even then, I think I just had sympathy for her because Superman kept being a jerk to her and left her at an orphanage.

I’m really looking forward to it though and I think you’re right it has been a while since we’ve seen some decent scifi action I just hope this doesn’t turn out to be Outlander.

But as I said in the podcast I think this is better if not equal to Superman III and certainly better than Superman IV.

Explorers was a film that I think I only saw kind of in my teenage years, I should give it another look as I don’t think I was that taken with the film.

But ever since Richard Donner was removed from the films they went to hell. Superman 3 & 4 are both terrible terrible movies.

But I do agree the casting was good for Supergirl.

My first impression of Lockout trailer was it was Escape from new York in space which is cool with me, its been far too long since we had a great sci-fi action movie.

It’s not a very popular opinion. I think I watched this a lot as a kid. Like, constantly. It was one of a handful of VHS tapes we had (Star Wars, Pee-Wee, Star Trek IV, and Explorers being the other most frequently viewed films). So admittedly, most of my affinity for this film has to do with nostalgia.

As a critical adult, I still regard this higher than Superman III and IV. As far as comics-to-film transfer, this is startling similar to Supergirl comics of the 60s and 70s. So it has to earn some points that way.

I never even noticed many of the things Lee brought up though about Jack Burton’s character. Maybe I need to rewatch it again sometime with a more critical eye. I remember liking it more as a kid though.

Eh, Netflix instant watch is okay. The problem with it is that it never has anything new on it. You’ve got lots of selection, but its often things you’ve watched all of about ten years ago. Lee would probably be in heaven though. It’s got all of the Star Treks.

I am a huge advocate for trying to change political thinking through the actual processes instead of making empty protests and by engaging with your congressman you’ve done exactly that!

As for more important issues, I think that with these kinds of films they are always shot to allow for a sequel but one isn’t always intended – it’s kind of like Star Wars being Episode 4 simply to give the overall feel that it’s in a serial. I think Carpenter does this with his films on purpose and to date I think I only know of two sequels he’s done – Escape from LA and someone will have to check but did he do Halloween 2?

Apart from that his films are standalone which despite wanting to see so much more is probably for the best!!

Dan, you’re wrong. Netflix’s streaming service is inadequate. Yes, it’s better than possibly any others, but still inadequate. I expect I’ll do a post about that on my blog at some point (even though I’ve touched on it before), because I’ve been looking at dropping cable again.

“Big Trouble” is an awesome film. To be fair, I think Dan makes some fair points. Some of the dialogue is a bit clunky… but then sometimes I think it was meant to be. This is partially a loving parody of action films, and I think the dialogue reflects that. I’m a little torn on the music critique… I share Dan’s general feeling toward synthesized music, but on the other hand I think it works perfectly with the sensibilities of this film.

BUT…. to say that Egg was “okay”!?! Dan, you’re an idiot. Outside of Burton, Egg is the character I want to follow in a sequel. Wang was fine, but for me, Egg is the better sequel character. Drop everyone else, team Egg with Burton, and you’ve got a winner of a sequel. I’d watch it in a heartbeat.

What is so great about Jack Burton is that he is this overly confident wise cracking guy in that 80s kind of way, that is completely in over his head and refuses to admit he has no idea what’s going on and bluffs his way through it.

I love the soundtrack I have it on my iPod/iPhone but I am generally a fan of JC soundtrack stuff.

As for Dan’s comparison to Ash, Ash as we know him didn’t show up until 87 with Evil Dead 2 and Big Trouble is 86 just so you know

I loved the 3 Storms, obviously there isnt a lot of character development but they do provide a menacing presence and play their part. They really were just the muscle for Lo Pan.

I cant find any faults in this movie, I didnt particularly find any dialogue cringe worthy I mean its not like we are watching the Godfather. I do get disappointed that Eddie didnt get to go to the final showdown that always felt unfair to me.

For the D and D fans did you ever notice that the eye monster at the end looks just like the Beholder from Dungeons and Dragons?
