Coming Up on the Midmoclub

Posted in Podcast, Trailers by - February 15, 2012

There is no regular podcast this week as during the time we usually record the show Lee was having his teeth pulled out and I was at work trying not to let my boss catch me browsing Reddit.

Still all is not lost as we were able to churn out a filler show, cobbled together from odds and sods found on youtube, my hard drive, and the faintly gooey crevice down the back of my sofa.

Oh yes, we certainly know how to treat you right here at the midmoclub.

Anyhow – here’s the podcast:

Make sure you leave a comment either here or over at the Facebook Page giving us your best guesses at the trailers we played.

Come back next week when we will be talking about the movie Daredevil (directors cut)

By day Dan works as a community psychiatric nurse. By night he mainly sleeps. But when he's not doing either of those two things he does a bit of gardening, walking, and movie watching. However mainly he wastes time tinkering on the internet. He lives in Yorkshire, England with his wife, three children, and a flock of megalomaniac chickens.

I couldnt quite place the 3rd one but here’s my guess on the rest.

    Titans AE
    karate kid

    The Goonies
    Cocktail
    Explorers
    Clue
    Top Gun
    labyrinth
    Flight of the navigator

    • Lee

I haven’t listened to the podcast yet, I’m saving that joy for tomorrow but I’m reasonably certain that you have at least one wrong, unless Dan has slipped one past me.

Which he could have certainly done.

      • Dan

Yup. One of those is wrong.

        • Lee

Dude, you got your email wrong.

  • I beleive 3 is “Krull”, just to fill in the gaps.

    So glad you’re doing Labyrinth.

    • phil

yeah I have listened to it again and its sounds like it to me too

  • phil

I think the 3rd is Krull i think, haven’t seen it for years though

  • A guy from Brisbane mooned the Queen a couple of weeks back. If they didn’t mention the age I would’ve thought it might’ve been Lee. So that’s what happened in Australia.

    As for the titles
I only recognized Karate kid and Top Gun.

And as for me singing…well no Voice of Holland entry for me I guess.

    • Lee

That guy mooned the Queen ages and ages ago when she was out here visiting. And yes apparently this is what goes on here in Australia.

The next time we have you on the podcast we won’t be mean to you.

      • I just know you’re going to edit or delete that by the time you’re going to call me next time.

The news from Australia travels slow. It just mentioned the fine he got (600AU$ I think).

        • Lee

LOL I didn’t hear that – so that’s the going price for flashing your buttocks at the Queen $600? Good to know.

          • he did say he would do it again if he had the chance.

  • chris

So the list is, also just posted this on facebook Titans AE
    karate kid
    Krull
    The Goonies
    Cocktail
    Explorers
    Clue
    Top Gun
    Willow
    Flight of the navigator
    Erik the Viking.

    Sadly no labyrith in there

    • We have discussed Labyrinth in the past as I hadn’t seen it until very recently but frankly anyone who holds it dear to their hearts really doesn’t want to hear Dan’s thoughts on it.

  • -The music in the Goonies trailer was so Neverending Story. Anybody else hear that?

-Oh man, that Explorers trailer got me so psyched! I might try to watch that this weekend.

-So, do you guys call the ‘Clue’ movie ‘Cluedo’?

    • I’ve never seen Explorers. I’m hoping it holds up for a 36 year old man in 2012 as much as it did for its original audience of kids in the 80s. I’m hoping.

No – clue is called clue – although no where near as beloved over her in the UK as I get the impression it is in the US.

      • I am American and I do recall being quite fond of Clue – though I probably haven’t seen it since I was about fourteen. And I don’t think my positive review was because of Tim Curry.

    • Lee

Yeah you’re right on Goonies – it confused me even though I knew the film was there :)

The game Clue is called Cluedo here in Australia and the film might share that name.

  • My guesses (without looking at the over reviews yet).

    Titan AE
    Karate Kid
    ? (Never seen this one)
    Goonies! (Hell yeah about time!)
    ?
    Explorers
Clue! (Yeah, all hail peer pressure).
    Top Gun
    Willow
    Flight of the Navigator
Monty Python and the Holy Grail? It seems like a Monty Python thing at least. I’ve never been into Monty Python.

    • Monty Python was close but it was Erik the Viking which whilst not strictly Python, certainly in the same vein (if I remember correctly)

  • The listener formerly known as Jobless Jonathan

    My guesses on the movies:

    1. Titan AE
    2. Karate Kid!
    3. No idea
    4. Goonies
    5. Cocktail
    6. No idea
    7. Clue
    8. Top Gun!
    9. No idea
    10. Flight of the navigator
    11. No idea

  • Loving this lineup (though damn you for excluding Fletch once again). I don’t give a lick about Titan AE and I’ve not seen Krull or Explorers, but you’ve got some of my favorite 80s classics on here, including The Karate Kid, Top Gun and Goonies (obviously), but Cocktail, Willow, and Flight of the Navigator are loved as well. Weird, I started hearing the trailers and so many of them sounded like cheesy 80s flicks I was sure I was going to get The Last Starfighter (whilst hoping for Flight) and then lo and behold I heard Flight – yes!

    • We did The Last Starfighter already back in the day: http://midmoclub.com/the-last-starfighter-1984/

I remember titan AE as being an underrated gem, but we’ll see I guess.

    • The Last Starfighter is one of my favourite films of all time so be careful there ;)

      • I realize that Starfighter has some merit to it, but I’ve always considered it to be one of the top films that would benefit from a remake. The effects could just not be cheesier, and I imagine it looked pretty dated within a year or two of being released.

        • The effects were a bit pants compared to moden day stuff, but the film has an amazing heart to it.

I’d be up for a remake too – but they would have to be pretty careful about it :)

        • Saying that – flight of the navigator was a film I treasured about as much as Last starfighter.

  • I think Titan AE was ahead of its time, i just watched it again at the weekend was just remembered how it was a good piece of science ficton with a great cast of voice actors. come one people Bill Pullman hes the president for Gods sake

  • SG-3

What a great list! I have a real soft spot for a heap of these, including Titan A.E., which Blyth got such a bad deal with (another film worth listening to the DVD commentary) I’m really looking forward to this season!

    • Hurrah! The Titan AE movement is growing slowly but steadily!

      • SG-3

I love it! But I dare you to watch it, and Treasure Planet, and Atlantis: The Lost Empire back-to-back! It will do your head in!

        • Ooo… that’s a good challenge. I like each of them individually, but back to back? Not sure I could take that.

          • SG-3

Indeed; they are all fun films, but each blurs so much into the other that you’ll end up dreaming of Dora the Explorer’s talking map!

    • SG-3

(And DOH, that was supposed to be Bluth, not Blyth! Silly autocorrecting phone!)
