Over the next few weeks I’m going to be pointing out a few podcasts that I personally enjoy. Both Lee and I feel that the world of podcasting should be a supportive community rather than a competitive marketplace, and one of the ways we can support other shows is by pointing our rather amazing audience towards them too.

So here’s my first two recommendations:

Fulltime Casual

Both Ian and I mentioned the Fulltime Casual podcast over on the Facebook page. This Australian podcast is hosted by Peter Wells and Justin Gibson, who have been friends for many years judging by the easygoing chemistry between the two.

The show focuses on all the usual geeky pursuits – TV, film, and general popular culture. But the guys stand a little taller than the rest by virtue of their reasoned and interesting reviews, easy wit, and general laid back attitude – not for them is the rabid fanboyism of many pop culture based shows.

Fulltime Casual isn’t the most regularly updated podcast out there, and isn’t one I particularly rely on to get all my geeky news. But they have pointed me in the direction of a number of now-loved movies and TV shows

The Ink Panthers Show

I’m not sure if I’ve ever mentioned it on the Midnight Movie Club, but by far my favourite comic book writer/artist is a chap called Alex Robinson. He is best known for his fantastic Box Office Poison indy comic series, the graphic novel of which I’ve bought multiple times in order to give them as gifts. I even gave Lee a copy a year or two ago.

Alex has also done other comics too, all of which have my sincere recommendation. The guy really is one of the finest comic creators out there.

Alex and his friend and fellow comic creator Mike Dawson put out a weekly-ish show called The Ink Panters Show. I’ve yet to check out Mikes comics, but i’ve been meaning to for ages (in fact – there – I just ordered his book Troop 142 from amazon now). The show does skirt round the world of indy comic artists, but is wide ranging in it’s topics and extremely accessible to all and is possibly the funniest show I listen to. I certainly leap on each and every episode as it comes out. It’s podcasting at it’s absolute bloody finest. Seriously, you need to check it out.

And that’ll do for this week I think. I listen to a lot of good shows and hopefully aim to point out some more for you over the five or six weeks or so. Certainly i’ll be including all the podcasting friends of the show so don’t start getting your knickers in a twist (I’m looking at the Casta La Vista guys here – those boys are so needy).

Now over the past week or so I’ve been talking about some of the films that I am catching up on of late, nothing unusual there I think we all go through patches where we seem to miss every film at the cinema and catch up on blu-ray or dvd later on.  The thing about these films though are that they’ve been benchmark films that I really should have seen.

My wife still won’t let it go that I only in the past couple years discovered the joy that is The Goonies, a point I concede completely.

I guess this line of thought started a couple of months ago when we watched Footloose which I’d never seen and was assured that I really should have, indeed I now know what to do with all my built up angst (release in dance form in the garage). That experience was surprisingly satisfactory (the film not the garage dancing) and I started thinking more and more about some of the absentees in my movie collective that have been gnawing at me for some time now. Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal were certainly the front runners having been exposed to them as a child but never having sat down to watch them in their entirety.

So I caught Labyrinth the other night and despite controversial comments from Mr Hughes (of which he has now clarified his position further) I actually really liked it and can see why it is such a touch point for so many of our generation. I was particularly taken with the character Ludo and the battle mech guarding the gates. Certainly the film is dated in places but it’s a testament to Jim Henson that a 34 year old man can enjoy it so many years after it was released (in fairness that man is me and I write this whilst wearing a Marty McFly Back to the Future 2 lenticular cap).

I haven’t had the chance to sit down and watch The Dark Crystal yet as Tracey refuses to watch it with me in the same manner that she refuses to watch The Lion King again. But the other movie that was sorely lacking and probably more so than these other two was John Carpenter’s The Thing.

If anything I certainly am all of these following things:

• a John Carpenter fan
• a Kurt Russell fanboy
• a science fiction nut.

Add to this my fondness for horror when I was a teenager and it seems ever so wrong that I’d never seen The Thing.  Well thanks in part to a day off unwell in bed and the news of the abysmal reception of the remake I finally watched The Thing and all is right in the universe again.

I enjoyed it, a lot.

It’s nice I think when you can discover such an iconic film after the event and appreciate it for everything that it is.

What it does do is make me wonder what other awesome films that I’ve missed that aren’t coming to mind!!

So I’ve shared mine, what are the films that you know that you really should have seen but haven’t gotten around to (I’m hoping that we share the same gaps and you’ll jog my memory!).

Then after a few more moons the guys over at Geek Tragedy finally overcame some technical difficulties and posted the podcast on their site.

And now, approximately seven years after it was actually recorded, we are getting round to telling you it exists.

OK, the news covered by the show is now a bit out of date. Lee is no longer excited about the pre production rumors surrounding Superman IV: The Quest for Peace nor is he speculating about a Manequin prequel. Still, its well worth a listen and you can do so here.

Also Lee is mentioned in the latest Casta La Vista Podcast and a question set by Dan is put to one of the biggest names in podcasting, Jimmy Pardo, over on Podcast Squared. But nether Lee or Dan actually appear on those shows, so they can’t be that good can they.

The Midnight Movie Club will be back with a special bonus episode featuring those reprobates from the Casta La Vista podcast next week.

Today they boys are guest co-hosting over at the fantastic movie news and reviews podcast Casta La Vista.

The show includes all the latest cinema news as well as reviews of Battle: LA, Company Men, and Submarine. Plus DVD reviews and a Anchorman quiz. It doesn’t get much better than this people.

Well whilst Dan has been pursuing his dreams of rock and roll and Lee has been mulling over the effect commercialism will have on the purity of books like Twilight you guys have been left without anything to listen to on a Wednesday.  We know it’s been tough but it’s nearly over.

To tide you over for the long seven days in front of you before their triumphant return Lee and Dan have at least recorded a Season Two trailer that will go down in history as the greatest Midnight Movie Club trailer for season two of their podcast ever.  I know this is a big call but you should judge for yourself:

So now his voice should be coming to you with crystal clear clarity. Of course they can do nothing about the claptrap he is actually spouting into the microphone, but you can’t have everything.

That’s right Lee said he didn’t feel like watching Jaws and Dan folded like a cheap cards table and so they decided a ramble in the Bronx (do you see what I did there?)  was what was called for.  If you follow the Facebook page or on Twitter you probably saw the call out for questions already.  Well now behold the answers!!!

It’s Lee here with a little bit of a departure from our regularly scheduled programming, if you’ve arrived on the home page looking for the latest podcast it’s the previous post.

Dan and I have been having a discussion regarding the level of swearing in the Midnight Movie Club and whilst Dan and I only do the podcast because it is neat to meet up online once a week and talk about a film that we’ve probably seen 100 times before we do care about what you the listeners think as well.

Now you may have read on Twitter that things did not go so well with The Monster Squad podcast.  Mostly because the film serves as a reminder that we’re getting old and some films that we treasured as youth do not hold up particularly well and that’s disappointing and can top off an already less than remarkable week.

I only say this to put the podcast that you guys won’t get to hear until next week into context when I say that I use the F word a total of 47 times.  Clearly this is too many times.  I’m not effing Gordon Ramsey.  But I was having a bad day and swearing enters my vocabulary when I’m ruffled.

So obviously as mentioned 47 times is going over the top but it did highlight for us a question we have and that is whether or not we should be a ‘clean’ podcast or not.  Reality of the situation is that we both swear, but we are also able to conduct conversations in our day to day lives that don’t include swearing, so it’s more than possible.

My own opinion and I hope Dan will either add his to the end of this or in the comments is that one or two swear words are fine, it’s how I talk but it also means that you probably can’t listen to it around your kids.  But with that said I’m also more than happy to be censored or bleeped out.

I guess what we’re looking for is a little feedback on the subject, so if you would be so kind please fill out the poll and maybe leave a comment around your own feelings on the subject – if you would like to drop us a private line that is fine too!
