Director: John Woo
Starring: John Travolta, Christian Slater, Samantha Mathis
Corrupt Air Force major (Travolta) intentionally crash lands a U.S. plane in the middle of the desert and holds two nuclear warheads for ransom. The only ones who can stop him are his co-pilot (Slater) and a U.S. park ranger (Mathis) patrolling the area .
This week we’re flying solo again. Marvel as we give an intelligent, in depth and witty report on the film…
Fine.
Who am I kidding!?
We get caught up in butterfly conversations and ramble on about Christian Slater’s career.

Next week:
We’re watching The Last Starfighter and we better not be disappointed or there will be much pouting.

From what I know, the ejection seat works as you said, Lee.
I agree with Dan, this is a fun popcorn movie. I also agree with Lee, that this film has huge problems when you look at it too deeply… like anything beyond the tip of the surface.
Part of the fun of these types of films is the stupid “trailer dialogue” (btw, I love that term. I think it should become a standard critic phrase).
Dan… nice job working in an Al Leong reference.
Looking forward to Last Starfighter… I actually have a story about that one.
@Jeff, there are a lot of films like that though (scratch the surface and they are really dumb) that I absolutely love.
The Last Starfighter should be interesting to see if it holds up as one of the greatest films ever.
@Jeff, I think the key to films like this is just don’t look under the surface – there isn’t anything there anyway.
OK, I’ve gotta stop visiting this site! I saw what next week’s movie is, and got all nostalgic and ordered a copy straight away on ebay- in NTSC (ack!) no less! And then ended up ordering Enemy Mine whilst on the nostalgia roll as well! I’m now checking all your podcasts for subliminal “Buy Dennis Quaid Movies!” messages. I suspect Dan’s voice is backmasked and slowed down in the opening theme music!
@SG-3, Dan does try and convince people to support Dennis Quaid films despite not being that huge a Quaid fan I don’t think.
Enemy Mine is a good buy though as I too would like to see it again myself. Perhaps you should guest review with us!!
@SG-3, yup. How about a Enemy Mine guest spot?
@Dan, I’m tempted, but I fear that I would only come across as being clueless (which would be true), and my voice would give away my true identity… I AM Dennis Quaid!
Drop me a line during the low ratings season, when you are scraping the bottom of the barrel, and I’ll give it some thought (and it will give me a chance to study up on all things Enemy Mine! Did I mention I’m clueless?!?!)
@SG-3, Low ratings season? That’s every season here at the Midnight Movie Club LOL!!
I hate to break this to you Lee, but out of the box, your PS3 is region locked. There isn’t anything you can do to that system that will allow you to play DVD’s from other regions right out of their cases.
And aside from my Scientology hatred, Battlefield Earth is still a steaming pile based on what went on the screen alone.
Wasn’t Jack Thompson on Homicide, Division 4 or Matlock Police?
@MC, It’s ok I found a region free Last Starfighter on Blu-ray (and I already own Ghostbusters so I’m pretty set until they bring out Jurassic Park).
Apparently the system is region free for games which is pretty sweet of them. Of course more Blu-rays are coming out now that are region free which I appreciate.
I don’t know about JT being in any of those shows – wikipedia didn’t enlighten me
A couple of things about this one: I think you’re expecting too much from this, suspension of disbelief-wise. I saw an interview with John Woo when this movie came out and he expressed its raison d’etre thus (in his fractured english): “John fight Christian! Christian fight John! Things blow up! Good movie!
The music is awesome, though. It reminds me a lot of the core that John Carpenter wrote for “They Live”. (Which must be a contender for MidMoClub!)
Also, the subject of lost nukes is near and dear to my heart, since I live about 10 miles from 3.8 megaton H-bomb that got lost in the 50′s:

So if you ever come to Savannah, don’t stomp your feet or talk too loud.
@JJ Daddy-O, They Live is definitely on the list, one of my favourite John Carpenter films, never got the recognition it deserved despite being actively ripped off… I mean homage by Duke Nukem.
Also:
Dan- thanks for the shout out!
Lee- you can get region-free DVD players that play DVDs from any country, one of which can be found for sale here:
http://www.jlist.com/PRODUCT/IVIEW1800HD
but I haven’t seen one that does Blu-ray. I understand that some Blu-ray releases are region-free however.
@JJ Daddy-O, my DVD player is a region free one (sony – even my original sony was region free funny enough). Blu-ray is a little different but then I doubt I’ll ever buy a stand-alone Blu-ray player anyway.
Fortunately you are right and a lot of the Blu-rays coming out are region free – can cost a little though bringing them in.
After embarrassing myself in the bank by bursting into laughter, I have finally finished listening to this podcast! Great work guys!
(And I apologize for daring suggest that “Dirty Dancing” was jumping the shark! It was just that… well… I had just finished watching ENEMY MINE when I made that comment!
)
@SG-3, LOL I’m worried about you listening to our podcast out and about, if I remember correctly you nearly mowed your own feet off last time!
Cheers though for the support – really appreciate it and glad someone apart from us is enjoying it!
I managed to get myself a copy of Enemy Mine the other day and am ashamed to say I think I ruined it by going straight to the end of the film. But in fairness to my own stupidity I have seen the film before.
@Lee, IMHO, I think Wolfgang Petersen ruined it by having THAT end of the film! Still worth a Midmoclub review though!
@SG-3, I literally only watched 30 seconds and the whole movie then felt like a lot of effort to go back and watch to get to that point, I will though at some stage.
