Big Trouble in Little China – 100th episode

Posted in Adventure, Podcast by - January 25, 2012

A drug addled Lee with toothache joins Dan for the giant, Huge, MASSIVE 100th episode featuring the all time classic and favourite of Lee (and apparently all of you) Big Trouble in Little China!

The boys discuss the history of having your teeth pulled out and the horror of the student dentist, as well as a discourse on hookers and your obsession with all things Frankenhooker.

The trailers that Lee made Dan watch this week:

Lee and Dan also comment on SOPA, Netflix in the UK and celebrity spotting.

Apologies for the quality of the sound, Dan is very loud and Lee is very quiet… Dan is overcompensating for something:

So what do you think of the podcast, did any of the hosts have an extraordinarily wrong opinion??

Let us know in the comments and come back next week for Supergirl!!!

I am too excited, I think I may have to jump straight to Dan’s opinion on this ;)

    • Lee

I’m sure it was everything you hoped for Phil :D

  • Phil

First up, big congratulations on 100th episodes very cool.

    Secondly, Oh Dan…

My mind is racing with thoughts, as with Lee this is in my top 5 of all time so I am a little biased. I was surprised that Dan went pretty easy on this I was expecting him to destroy although I do disagree with you ;)

What is so great about Jack Burton is that he is this overly confident wise cracking guy in that 80s kind of way, that is completely in over his head and refuses to admit he has no idea what’s going on and bluffs his way through it.

I love the soundtrack I have it on my iPod/iPhone but I am generally a fan of JC soundtrack stuff.

As for Dan’s comparison to Ash, Ash as we know him didn’t show up until 87 with Evil Dead 2 and Big Trouble is 86 just so you know ;)

I loved the 3 Storms, obviously there isnt a lot of character development but they do provide a menacing presence and play their part. They really were just the muscle for Lo Pan.

I cant find any faults in this movie, I didnt particularly find any dialogue cringe worthy I mean its not like we are watching the Godfather. I do get disappointed that Eddie didnt get to go to the final showdown that always felt unfair to me.

For the D and D fans did you ever notice that the eye monster at the end looks just like the Beholder from Dungeons and Dragons?

Oh and you guys didn’t mention Al Leong or the fact that the original script was a western :)

    • Lee

I agree with everything you’re saying here Phil and to be fair to Dan he didn’t hate the film he just doesn’t LOVE the film as much as us enlightened souls.

I understand that he needs to work harder at being better ;)

Actually I meant to mention Al Leong a couple of times and also can’t believe that we didn’t discuss him – however we did last week so that’s all good.

Podcast notes in chronological order (as if you asked for them):

Pretty Woman is possibly the most famous movie about hookers.

Salt was a decent movie. I would watch a sequel.

Loud and obnoxious Americans???? LOUD AND OBNOXIOUS?? HOW DARE YOU???? Oh, wait, you got me.

By the way, you’ll be happy to know I petitioned my congressmen and senators against SOPA and as you know it failed (for now).
See? Being loud and obnoxious is sometimes helpful!

So the guy who BURPS in our ears calls Americans loud and obnoxious? Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Jack Burton to me was fantastic and reminded me of an incompetent John Wayne, especially with how he spoke most of the time. I LOVE Lee’s defense of Jack Burton as the
type of guy who is loyal and is ready to stand by his friends, no matter the danger. Reminds me of Aragorn, Legolas and Gimley.

GREAT analysis by both of you on the left wing-right wing aspect of westerners getting involved in muddied situations. And before you get too judgmental, both of your countries supported GW in going into Iraq. Tsk, tsk.

Was Big Trouble in Little China meant to have a sequel? I agree with Lee that they were a great buddy team.

Were the “silly hats guys” the basis of Mortal Kombat characters?

As far as people not liking Lee because he’s Australian, I must say that I for one love Australians and I really like Lee. Plus, he’s never made fun of my economic condition. :)

Congrats Dan on being a dad for a third time!

Seriously guys, you have a great podcast going here. I’ve recommended it to friends as well.

    • Lee

Jonathan kudos to you for doing your bit around SOPA, it can be a little frustrating for us outside of America who are still affected but can’t really do anything but spread the word.

I am a huge advocate for trying to change political thinking through the actual processes instead of making empty protests and by engaging with your congressman you’ve done exactly that!

As for more important issues, I think that with these kinds of films they are always shot to allow for a sequel but one isn’t always intended – it’s kind of like Star Wars being Episode 4 simply to give the overall feel that it’s in a serial. I think Carpenter does this with his films on purpose and to date I think I only know of two sequels he’s done – Escape from LA and someone will have to check but did he do Halloween 2?

Apart from that his films are standalone which despite wanting to see so much more is probably for the best!!

      Thanks for all the support.

  • Another film with hookers: Trading Places

Dan, you’re wrong. Netflix’s streaming service is inadequate. Yes, it’s better than possibly any others, but still inadequate. I expect I’ll do a post about that on my blog at some point (even though I’ve touched on it before), because I’ve been looking at dropping cable again.

“Big Trouble” is an awesome film. To be fair, I think Dan makes some fair points. Some of the dialogue is a bit clunky… but then sometimes I think it was meant to be. This is partially a loving parody of action films, and I think the dialogue reflects that. I’m a little torn on the music critique… I share Dan’s general feeling toward synthesized music, but on the other hand I think it works perfectly with the sensibilities of this film.

BUT…. to say that Egg was “okay”!?! Dan, you’re an idiot. Outside of Burton, Egg is the character I want to follow in a sequel. Wang was fine, but for me, Egg is the better sequel character. Drop everyone else, team Egg with Burton, and you’ve got a winner of a sequel. I’d watch it in a heartbeat.

Congrats on 100 episodes! Who’da thunk it?

I think the live show is an awesome idea. I might even be willing to get up at an ungodly hour to participate (which, I think, gives a good idea of how utterly pathetic my life is).

    • US Netflix isn’t perfect – and may not be a replacement to cable. But trust me Jeff, it’s 5000% better than anything available in the UK and well worth the £6 a month I’m paying.

So I think you will find it’s YOU that is wrong.

And Egg is just a box standard oriental wise man stereotype. He’s ok, sure. Even endearing. But nothing to set the world alight.

      • Lee

I think this episode is quickly becoming my favourite of all of our podcasts, I like to refer to it as the one in which everyone says how wrong Dan is about everything. :D

      • Come on, Dan. He’s a good Egg. Admit it.

(It had to be said eventually, you know.)

Plus, he’s got a six-demon bag, so your argument is invalid.

    • Lee

I was thinking to myself during the conversation if anyone will know of more “hooker” films it will be Jeff…

I shall overlook your leaning towards agreeing with Dan and chalk that up to pity which is nice as we should pity those who know not better.

But you are very right about an Egg / Burton follow up story – that would be a cracker. But I think Wang doesn’t get a enough credit.

Thanks for all your support over the 100 episodes as well Jeff, having guest hosted makes you part of the history of the show :D

      • I really enjoyed that guest hosting. I’m glad it worked out. Sometimes I relive the glory and go back and listen to those podcasts. ;)

    • Jonathan

Jeff! Good catch on Trading Places. A great movie. The best hooker movie of all time, perhaps?

“In Philadelphia, it’s worth 50 bucks.” -pawn shop guy

      • It’s certainly a contender, and ripe for a MidMo review as well.

“Please to help me with my rokesack, yah?” – hooker pretending to be a Swedish German… or something like that. (and I have no idea what “rokesack” is)

        “Beef jerky time!”

Risky Business has a hooker, doesn’t it? I never actually saw more than a few minutes of that one.

        • Lee

Risky Business does indeed feature a hooker.

  • According to Wikpedia….

Harlan Ellison said that this movie has “some of the funniest lines spoken by any actor this year to produce a cheerfully blathering live-action cartoon that will give you release from the real pressures of your basically dreary lives”

    • Lee

I was going to make a snarky comment about Harlan Ellison claiming that he wrote this but by only mentioning it I don’t come off as an ill-informed Ellison hater :P

      He is right here though.

Thanks for sharing Mickey I’d never read that quote before!!

  • I was going to leave a short “well done guys” comment, but I’d hate to cheapen the mood here: All the comments so far are amazing. I’ll go write some drafts and come back when I have something worthy to post.

I will say this though: I watched BTILC again (for the 2nd time ever) and I’m with Dan on this one.

    • Lee

Did you watch BTiLC for the first time semi recently as well? I seem to remember it wasn’t that long ago.

  • Kelly

I just wanted to say I enjoy a long rambling podcast.

I have brainwashed my friend Megan into listening. Hopefully her husband will soon follow, I’ve been informed he now as HIS own podcast(I’m thinking it’s about WarHammer). Fancy Dancy.

I am a bit on the fence with the movie…..I LOVED it as a child/teenager…….not so much now. Could be that I’m not a huge Kurt Russel fan……I just don’t know. I sitll would have given it at least an 8 Dan. :P

    • Dan

I like rambling podcasts – but there gets a point that even WE outstay our welcome (hard to believe I know)

We mention Megan’s husband at the end of the Supergirl podcast in case he needs a carrot dangled in front of his nose.

    • Lee

Interesting that you loved it when younger and have now grown apart. That seems to be the opposite to everyone.

Not a Kurt Russell fan!?!?! Kelly… for shame :P

  • I think I agree with Dan about this movie. I like it, but I never quite understood people’s cult love of it. I even tried rewatching it a few months ago after coming across another podcast about it and… I just don’t get it.

I never even noticed many of the things Lee brought up though about Jack Burton’s character. Maybe I need to rewatch it again sometime with a more critical eye. I remember liking it more as a kid though.

Eh, Netflix instant watch is okay. The problem with it is that it never has anything new on it. You’ve got lots of selection, but its often things you’ve watched all of about ten years ago. Lee would probably be in heaven though. It’s got all of the Star Treks.

    • Dan

      ANOTHER PODCAST??!!

      *sniff*

      • Lee

        Don’t worry Dan I don’t listen to other podcasts…

        Well mostly.

    • Lee

It’s interesting about having Star Trek on demand, i don’t know how I’d feel about giving up my physical Star Trek library (sadly I’m even considering importing the Star Trek TNG blu-rays but don’t tell Tracey!)

      • Dan

I’ve been enjoying revisiting deep space 9.

        • Kelly

I am very tempted to get that. I’m very much enjoying the Orginal series dvd’s I bought, and I have season 1 of TNG, but I would have to shell out almost $300 a piece to actually OWN the entire series of TNG and DS9, and I REALLY miss DS9, I was super into that as a preteen. I miss Quark and and Garek, and would love to revisit them.

And sorry Lee, but yes, not a fan, lol. I’m indifferent really. It’s not like I hate him like I do Nic Cage and John Travolta….lol…who just give me the creeps. I DO love Tombstone, but that’s all Val Kilmers fault.

          • £6 a month for netflix streaming seems much more sensible to me, but then again i’ve never really felt the need to own hard copies of my media.

          • I do like Kurt Russel … I loved him and Goldie Hawn in Overboard (there’s a movie you guys should consider doing for the midmoclub sometime). For some reason I’m not feeling whatever magic everyone else is feeling with him in this movie.

Oh btw, Dan I left you some anime recomendations on my blog: http://fantasymoviepodcast.com/special-anime-talk/#comment-490

I’d say try Castle of Cagliostro first.

I could never get into Deep Space Nine. Creepy worm lady freaked me the hell out. Remember when it was a bad thing to have mind altering personality destroying parasistes n your body in Star Trek? Ah, the good ole days.

            • Dan

I saw the recommendations – I’d subscribed to the comments. Thanks, I really appreciate the tips. I shall report back via the podcast when i’ved watched them. Think I’m going to get through watching fullmetal alchemist first though.

I have a real soft spot for Overboard.

  • Still haven’t had a chance to listen to this, but wanted to say congrats on the milestone! Keep ‘em comin’, guys…just not the weird, shitty B-movies. :D

    • Dan

Horses for courses man, horses for courses:)

(but you are probably right – especially as we have to watch the bloody things)
