Batman Forever

Michael Keaton and Tim Burton are out and Val Kilmer and Joel Schumacher are in.

Is this a turn for the better?

Will Lee and Dan fall in love with the Schumacher Batmobile?  Three things are sure, apparently chicks dig the car, blacklight paint poses a huge problem to the peace in Gotham City and you’re going to have to listen to the podcast to find out what the boys thought.

Apart from Batman Forever Lee and Dan chat about such issues as:

First! Yeah, that’s right Phil, I’M FIRST!!!

  • phil

First? are we still doing that? ;)

    • Dan

      No. No we’re not.

      • http://www.facebook.com/marshmi Ian

        spoilsport :-(

  • phil

Still listening to the podcast but John Wyndham is a great author, amongst the books you mention did you ever see Chocky a kids tv series from the 80s based on his book?

    • http://quityourdayjob.com.au Lee

Chocky used to terrify the living shit out of me.

      I still watched it though.

      • SG-3

I couldn’t stop eagerly watching, even though I found what the poor lad was going through very disturbing!

  • phil

I tried watching this a couple weeks back when it was on tv, 20 painful minutes in and I turned it off.

Val Kilmer as Batman, terrible, maybe with a different director it could of worked.
    Nicole Kidman terrible.

Jim Carrey as the Riddler, this could of worked, I loved Ace venture and Cable guy, again with a better director this could of worked but its like the director had no control over him. Every line of dialogue is cringe worthy.

Two Face – Terrible terrible terrible. its like nobody even bothered to read the comic to get a feel for the characters. over the top shit performance.

The Batmobile – dumb glowing crap is just stupid. Driving up the side of a building holy crap dumb.

The dialogue – terrible utter crap.

Chris O’Donnel as Robin, Dick Grayson was never a crew cut haired, ear ring, leather jacket wearing tool, a completely different character.

Sadly Tim Burton actually produced this one.

    2 stars.

Dan – any good recommendations from your batman comic fest? Just finished reading the complete Hush and thought it was awesome. Face to Face is another fave of mine, check it our if you haven’t already! Both series have some awesome artwork and a respectable helping of villains.

  • Alan

Also liking the robo-batman but my current batman toy of choice is http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/B000IU24Z6/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_0/181-1813945-4586559?ie=UTF8&index=0

Oh yeah, and how do I get an avatar on here?!?!

    • http://quityourdayjob.com.au Lee

Hey Alan, if you go sign up over on gravatar.com with the same email then a bunch of services will be able to pick up your avatar automatically.

      • Matt T

Hey that works (not that I thought it wouldn’t).

  • Morgan

I actually saw this flick in the theaters in England and like Dan I remember liking it. I think I was just jazzed about being out of Alaska. The one part I found ridiculous though was the boiling acid. Seriously? One why does it need to be boiling and two how the hell would they do it?

Wait now I remember why I liked it…..

This movie hurts too much to comment on it.

    • http://quityourdayjob.com.au Lee

      Imagine watching it again.

      The horror…

  • Andrea

Hey! You mentioned some books on this podcast, but my American ears must have written it down wrong.

You said ti was a MUST READ! I wrote down “Midwitch Cookers”? There’s no way that’s right! What was it?

    • http://quityourdayjob.com.au Lee

Hey Andrea, the book I mentioned is The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham – it was filmed as Village of the Damned quite a few years ago.

It’s an excellent read and I can’t recommend it higher if you like science fiction with a hint of horror.

      • phil

Actually been filmed twice, first time in the 60s ;)

        • http://quityourdayjob.com.au Lee

The 60s are quite a few years ago.

    • http://midmoclub.com Dan

The Midwitch Cuckoos is good, but I still say the Chrysalids is better (US title Re-Birth apparently)

      • http://quityourdayjob.com.au Lee

That’s because my interwebz cats fu is stronger than yours.

        • phil

oh yeah well mine is a like the ninja, you wont see it until its too late.

  • Kelly

just got this from Itunes today, it does make me a little late to the party, lol.

As much as I like me some young Val Kilmer…..I refuse to watch this movie becasue Jim Carey weirds me out as it is, and seeing him in that joker outfit is down right disturbing.

I will stick to The Doors and The Ghost and the Darkness for my Kilmer oogling.

I’ve never seen the next two movies…..and it will propbably stay that way.

    • http://www.facebook.com/marshmi Ian

      That’s a good plan.

  • http://www.facebook.com/marshmi Ian

I’ve been meaning to leave a real comment on here but things have been a bit hectic at home. I promise to work on my priorities.

I went and saw this film in the cinema when it first came out and I remember really liking it. I thought the car wasn’t as good as Keaton’s and the neon gangbangers were crap but the rest of the film was very enjoyable.

Because of that, I found your review very confronting. Will I still like it now? Is it really as bad as Batman and Robin? Could it be worse? Should I watch it again and be sure?

I do value your opinions on films (mostly), so I think I’ll leave Batman Forever on the shelf and my fond memories intact a while longer.

By the way, I saw The Big Lebowski a few nights ago and absolutely loved it. John Goodman is The Man! Thank you very much for the recommendation.

    • phil

No this movie definitely isn’t as bad as Batman & Robin, I saw this at the movies too and while I didnt hate it back then I have grown to loathe it now. I tried watchin it a couple weeks back when it was on Go and had to stop it. So maybe its best to keep it in the past ;)

As for the Big Lebowski, its about time ;)

      • http://www.facebook.com/marshmi Ian

Thanks Phil. In fact, I enjoyed The Big Lebowski way more than BTILC. It may be comparing apples with oranges, but that’s how I feel.

    • phil

One of my favourite lines form this movie that involves Walter is:

      DUDE
And you know Smokey has emotional problems!

      WALTER
      You mean–beyond pacifism?

  • http://www.facebook.com/chrisb1306 chris

I also have fond memiors of going to see this in the cinema when i was young and also getting excited about getting the VHS for christmas on reflection i think that was just be stupid when i was young, but i really enjoy Val bruce Wayne the rest oft he movie sucked

  • http://fantasymoviepodcast.com Kasey

The Dan Slott She-Hulk is pretty good too (I assume you’re reading the eighties series?). Peter David’s She-Hulk sucks though. But Peter David sucks in general, imho.

    • http://quityourdayjob.com.au Lee

No that’s the one I was reading the Slott version which I just love.

i remember seeing this in the cinema and loving it,forgive me i was 14! over the years my opinion of it has got less and less but still hasnt got to the level of hate that you guys have, heck im one of a few minority of people who doesnt hate batman and robin. That being said ive not watched now for a good 5/6 years. Im scared to watch it now after that but its there in its wrapping still on my shelf in my batman pile of dvd’s grabbing my attention when ever i walk in the room. so…I’ve started using my phone as an mp3 player to listen to the podcasts again on the job. I’m going to listen to a major backlog (for me at least) and will then start writing angry ‘Hans Blix’-style letters to Itunes..

That Batman Robot vinyl invader costs around a whopping 36$ and what’s even scarier…it seems people have actually bought it. I expect photo’s of Midmo fanboys with 2 thumbs up somewhere in July.

I listened to Batman returns and Batman forever today and have to say it’s been ages since I’ve seen either one (at léast 10 years I think..) and I think I laughed a lot watching Batman returns and I’m with Dan on Seal’s song that was used for the Forever movie :P
